A New Mosque Rises—in Alaska

Construction Is Part of a Building Boom Nationwide as Muslim Population Rises

ANCHORAGE—On the edge of this northern outpost an unfamiliar sight is emerging: twin minarets. Alaska's small but growing Muslim community is building the state's first newly constructed mosque.

"This is our future," said Osama Obeidi, one of the Muslim-Americans leading the building effort for the Islamic Community Center of Anchorage. "We have second-generation Alaskans now, and new people coming all the time. We need a place to call home."

The 15,000-square-foot mosque, taking shape near a Sons of Norway Viking Hall, will eventually include a Sunday school and a community center. Heated floors will make worship in the bitter winters more comfortable.

The mosque is perhaps the clearest sign yet that Islam in the U.S. is rapidly pushing beyond traditional population centers such as Detroit and Los Angeles. As the number of American Muslims grows through both immigration and higher-than-average birthrates, domes and minarets are sprouting in areas as varied as the eastern mountains of Kentucky and Louisiana's parishes.

The building boom reflects American Muslims' desire for a sense of permanence as their religion shifts from one mainly imported by immigrants to one practiced by their American-born children and grandchildren, Muslim leaders say.

"This is our future," said Osama Obeidi

Your future is everyone else's nightmare.

We can largely thank the Supremes appointed by FDR.

They lead the charge to stomp Christianity out of the public square. The vast majority of people will not believe in nothing, and islam is filling the void.

It is far easier to grow despotisms than it is to maintain a republic. Yes, adios to western civ.

Are we supposed to believe indigenous muzzies, and not foreign hostile nations provided the big $ to build these military outposts?

Wow.

Hey, where are the churches being built in Saudi Arabia?

At least the Egyptian government, once the Muslim Brotherhood was removed, began protecting the Christian minority population.

Buchanan Book, “Death of The West” predicted all of this.

Mosques or bases?

I wonder what the proximity of Mosques to likely targets is across the country?

Should never happen, it would be built when they allow Christians and Jews to build in their islamic countries.

My husband and I lived in Saudi Arabia for five years. On our camp we had "large rooms" that were used for many things. We had a vicar, reverend (for ALL Protestant denominations) and a priest.
The Anglicans and Protestants met once a week but on Friday mornings, as that was the Muslim "Sunday." We Catholics, as usual, had a daily 9:00 A.M. Mass.

I worked Saturdays-Wednesdays, 40 hours a week, as normal. Our "church" was across the street and I only went once a week, on SUNDAYS, because I wasn't going to any stinkin' Friday services "just because."

So I went every Sunday morning. My old Saudi boss allowed it as he was, most probably, a very devout Muslim. He was also VERY smart as he was illiterate but still boss. He had a phenomenal memory.
Harry, my Indian Catholic co-worker, was the problem. He was always SO angry when I went to Mass. He warned me that if I continued to go to Mass he would "tell" on me.
Harry finally did "tell" on me. I never quite figured out why Harry had such a bug up his butt about me going to Mass. I always made up the time. We were both Catholics. What was the big deal?

I will never forget that confrontation in the hallway and Harry yelling at our boss about me going to Sunday Mass when I should be working.
My Muslim boss said: "Harry, God is number one. There is always time for God. {Cloud Mountain} can go to pray whenever she wants."
Lol. I don't know WHOSE jaw dropped first, faster or farther, Harry's or mine.
So I went to Sunday morning Mass. And, because I COULD, I started going to DAILY Mass. Go figure.

I have my Saudi boss to thank for my (STILL) daily Mass habit. We had NO "churches" in the KSA, as they are not allowed, but the Saudis, being Saudis, found a compromise:
*We had priests, reverends and vicars but they were called SPECIAL TEACHERS.
*We had plenty of places to pray but they were NOT called CHURCHES.

Just a few thoughts and I am NOT being critical in any way, shape or form of you or of anyone on this thread. You ARE correct, there are no "churches" or "temples" in the KSA.

There were Jews, however, but ONLY American Jews.
There was SUCH a dearth of medical specialists, especially WOMEN medical specialists, that they hired American Jewish women medical specialists to take care of Saudi women. If there had been a plethora of American Protestant/Catholic medical WOMEN medical specialists, they would have hired them...but there weren't.
There weren't many American Jews, but they were there.

It was quite a place. My husband called it an "adventure of a lifetime." And so it was for us.

You’re right, Steelfish. Buchanan’s book was what I had in mind.

That is a very interesting memory of your life amongst the Saudi’s. I’ll remember it for a long time.

Thank you. It was, as my husband said, an adventure of a lifetime.
It's as vivid to me still as if it happened last week.
Al-hamdu lillah!

... which is a bit surprising, given that our town is the home of The Mother Mosque of America!
