Showing his support for those suffering from Lou Gehrigs disease, the superintendent of Catholic schools for the Cincinnati Archdiocese took part in the ice bucket challenge Aug. 21.
Superintendent Jim Rigg was joined by Tom Otten, principal of Elder Catholic High School, on the schools campus. The challenge has taken the nation by storm to raise money in support of research into the disease, which is formally known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease for which there is no cure and no proven treatments.
In the challenge, people are asked to share videos through social media that show them dumping a bucket of ice water on their heads - or having someone else do the dumping. They also have to name others to do the same in the next 24 hours or donate $100 to the ALS Association.
But questions raised about research supported by the ALS Association have left some Catholics concerned about participating in the effort.

all or nearly all disease related charities participate fully with the culture of death through embryonic stem cell research.
Just say NO!
The culture is infected with death, its hard to try to do good through secular charities that exist in our culture without tainting ourselves or participating in the disregard for life.
If I see a YouTube video of Pope Francis dumping a bucket of ice on his head, I’m writing him off.
You can take part in the challenge and donate to an ALS charity that does not support embryonic stem cell research. One such charity is Team Gleason.
I already volunteered my cat for the ALS bucket challenge and it already has 20 Youtube Likes (and 30 dislikes).
Is the latest fad? Sweeping the country.
I guess it’s another why to distract the people the idiot in the oval office..... Sorry, I mean golf course.
ALS association isn’t the only charity involved. There are others but the press is pushing this one.
(AP) — A Catholic diocese in Ohio is discouraging its schools from participating in the ice bucket challenge to benefit the ALS Association, citing its funding of research involving embryonic stem cells.
Ice bucket challenge co-founder laid to rest after drowning in diving accident.
I am glad that the Ice Bucket Challenge is getting attention. For too many years ALS has been associated with Muscular Dystrophy Association and the funding NEVER flowed to ALS research.
I lost my mother to ALS nearly 20 years ago and while you may not like everything about what people are doing at least it is raising awareness about this brutal disease.
In an email to Religion News Service, Carrie Munk, a spokeswoman for the ALS Association, said that the organization primarily funds adult stem cell research.
Currently, The Association is funding one study using embryonic stem cells (ESC), and the stem cell line was established many years ago under ethical guidelines set by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS); this research is funded by ONE specific donor, who is committed to this area of research, she said. The project is in its final phase and will come to an end very soon.
