Seven Things Even God Cannot Do
Break Point ^ | 08/18/2014 | By: Rolley Haggard

It is commonly supposed that if God can't do absolutely anything and everything, then He isn't all-powerful. Yet Scripture teaches there are some things even God cannot do, though it affirms in countless places that He is, nonetheless, “almighty.”

Here is a list of things the Bible says outright, or by necessary implication, God cannot do:

1. Lie (or do anything else immoral)—Titus 1:2

2. Deny Himself (i.e., do anything out of character)—2 Timothy 2:13

3. Remit/forgive sins without the shedding of blood (i.e., taking of life)—Hebrews 9:22

4. Avoid going to Calvary if man is to have hope of forgiveness—Matthew 26:39

5. Pardon someone who will not repent/believe—2 Peter 3:9

6. Remain righteous by passing over sins and never requiring blood atonement—Romans 3:25-26

7. Be tempted by evil—James 1:13

Can you add to the list?

Can you compose a definition of “almighty” more consonant with what the Bible says God can and cannot do?

Can you think of reasons why this might be more than an academic exercise or a needless distinction?

The Hebrew word translated as “help meet” in the KJV simply means helper, there is no connotation of mating in that word.

9. Make a rock so heavy even He can’t lift it.

10. Make a burrito so spicy that even He can't eat it.

The day he played Moses and Noah and he aced the first hole, a par4. his drive hit a tree, caromed into a boulder, then a osprey grabbed the ball and proceeded dropping it on the green, where a rabbit ran over and bumped into the hole!
Moses then said to God “ We told you last time you keep playing that way and we will quit!”

God has temptation in his face. Jesus was tempted by Satan to skip the cross among other parlor tricks. So I would say; 7. God cannot give in to temptation.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

Note the significance of this. It isn't that God didn't know what Adam was going to call the animals. The assigning of names indicates superiority. For God to allow Adam to assign the names of the animals is to ratify Adam's superiority over the animals. Although Adam is a created being, just as the animals are, he is not "just another animal."

God cannot die or even kill Himself, because if He could, He would not be eternal.

RE: God cannot give in to temptation.

And Jesus answering said unto him (Satan), It is said, ‘Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.’ (Deuteronomy 6:16)

And yet Satan defied Him. Bad guys don’t care except to break the law. Jesus sets a great example there. God will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to resist, and always gives us an out from temptation.

Characters constantly tempt God, but He is not affected. So as a matter of semantics, I suppose one temps God, but He is not tempted. I think the use of language limits the comprehension of this verb’s use.

RE: was God truthful when he asked abraham to sacrifice his son...

God said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” (Genesis 22:2)

In what way is this either a lie or a truth? It was simply a command, not a statement of fact or even a promise.

Whatever. God brought all the animals expecting Adam to pick one. Adam rejected God’s offering.

I take it you don’t believe that Jesus Christ is God incarnate?
