California Bishop Removes ‘Openly Homosexual’ Priest from Berkeley Campus Parish

BERKELEY, CA, April 7, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Oakland Bishop Michael Barber, Pope Francis’ first U.S. episcopal appointment, has drawn ire from Catholic progressives after replacing the priests serving the University of California at Berkeley campus, one of whom is “openly homosexual.”

Newman Hall Holy Spirit Church, which functions as the parish church for Catholic students at the university, has been led by its pastor, Fr. Bernard Campbell, for the past seven years. Fr. Bill Edens, a self-identified homosexual, has served as student chaplain for the last five. Both are members of the Paulist order, which normally appoints priests at the parish.

Barber explained in a letter to the parish that he had intervened in the regular process because he wants to “totally reinvigorate our evangelization efforts for the University Community at Cal Berkeley,” and “reinvigorate and expand our mission ‘to the periphery.’”

Fr. Campbell described the bishop’s decision as a “sad moment” in a statement to parishioners.

No, I don’t think the whole order is bad. Their founder may even be canonized soon. They do some good media work, too.

How can a priest be “openly homosexual” without having violated the oath of chastity?

I agree that the traditional, ornate style of church furniture often looks beautiful if replaced in a stark, simple setting. Alas - everything has to be swept away and replaced by glumping stuff. Modernisation of churches could have been a chance to revitalise the charm of the old style, and introduce new, pristine lines - but this was rarely the case. In just a few churches, this was attained.

Thanks for your account - it is a whole chapter of contemporary history - both individual and collective.

Good grief. What did the kids at Berkeley do to deserve that?

Catacomb masses were celebrated on proper altars made as beautiful as circumstances would permit. they were not deliberately brutalist designs that pointedly excluded beauty. That sanctuary is a sign of profound spiritual disorder. It’s a sin — literally, a mortal sin — for the Newman Center to assault the sensibilities of impressionable, hungry young people with this spectacle of barrenness and sterility. It’s a vision of a world without God, without hope. It’s Good Friday, forever.

Ahem...visualize the front dais (or whatever it is) a little more closely.

Good catch.

And if you study it a bit it's even more blatantly a tribute to homosexuality then it looks like at first glance.

Amazing...

Oh and lol@ I give up.

**Barber explained in a letter to the parish that he had intervened in the regular process because he wants to “totally reinvigorate our evangelization efforts for the University Community at Cal Berkeley,” and “reinvigorate and expand our mission ‘to the periphery.’” **

A bishop is responsible for all Catholics — not just the homosexuals......isn’t that what is drawing Campbell’s ire?

And a Bishop can intervene anywhere — nothing wrong about his announcement at all.
