Survey: Majority of Americans, Including Catholics, Support Same-Sex Marriage
Catholic Culture ^ | 2/27/14

53% of Americans-- including 58% of white Catholics and 56% of Latino Catholics-- now support same-sex marriage, according to a survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute.

In 2003, Americans opposed same-sex marriage by a 59%-32% margin.

“Roughly three-quarters (73%) of Catholics believe that most of their fellow congregants are opposed to same-sex marriage,” the survey continued. “However, Catholics who regularly attend church are in fact divided on the issue (50% favor, 45% oppose).”

“Majorities of Americans perceive three religious groups to be unfriendly to LGBT people: the Catholic Church (58%), the Mormon church (53%), and evangelical Christian churches (51%),” the survey added. “At least two-thirds of LGBT Americans perceive both the Catholic Church (73%) and evangelical Christian churches (67%) as being unfriendly toward LGBT people.”

The war is over, folks. The percentage of "those in favor .." is only going to rise and same sex "marriage" will soon spread through the country like a wildfire. As for the Catholic capitulation, it started long ago in 1968, maybe even earlier.

Disgusting. Supporting a practice of sexual buggery and dressing it up as “marriage” is abhorrent. The ONLY thing these people celebrate is how they have sex. America’s morality is gone. Stalin was right. They’ve collapsed one tier and the others are falling with it.

All part of the great falling away that Christ prophesied about.

WHERE ARE THE SPIRITUAL LEADERS?

WHERE ARE THEY?

People who openly support sodomy MUST BE EXCOMMUNICATED by ANY Church that claims to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

What would anyone expect? There’s only one side being allowed to make an argument.

While this is troubling, it is not at all surprising. I know there are many sincere Catholics, but I think this puts further evidence to the fact that being Catholic simply means many merely identify with some vague religious structure. I think this shows that by and large calling yourself “Catholic” does not really mean much. Those who call themselves Catholic do not believe the Bible or have a personal relationship with the Savior.

The Bible is very explicit about sexual relationships being between and a man and a women in the context of marriage. This is not some gray area - at all.

I sit in mass every week and barely a mention of this crisis. Barely a peep about abortion or the destruction of marriage. There’s no leadership, so the flock is astray.

Unfortunately, I do. I am a catholic and feel like a minority in my own church.

If this is true the progressives are certainly making “progress”.

Nancy Pelosi calls herself a Catholic, and yet thinks abortion is “sacred”. Nancy Pelosi calls herself Catholic and yet is in favor of homosexual marriage. What does it actually mean to be “Catholic”?

As for the Catholic capitulation, it started long ago in 1968, maybe even earlier.

A whole lot earlier (identified as a specific American problem back in 1899...meaning it's a lot older than that):

The underlying principle of these new opinions is that, in order to more easily attract those who differ from her, the Church should shape her teachings more in accord with the spirit of the age and relax some of her ancient severity and make some concessions to new opinions. Many think that these concessions should be made not only in regard to ways of living, but even in regard to doctrines which belong to the deposit of the faith. They contend that it would be opportune, in order to gain those who differ from us, to omit certain points of her teaching which are of lesser importance, and to tone down the meaning which the Church has always attached to them. It does not need many words, beloved son, to prove the falsity of these ideas if the nature and origin of the doctrine which the Church proposes are recalled to mind. The Vatican Council says concerning this point: "For the doctrine of faith which God has revealed has not been proposed, like a philosophical invention to be perfected by human ingenuity, but has been delivered as a divine deposit to the Spouse of Christ to be faithfully kept and infallibly declared. Hence that meaning of the sacred dogmas is perpetually to be retained which our Holy Mother, the Church, has once declared, nor is that meaning ever to be departed from under the pretense or pretext of a deeper comprehension of them." -Constitutio de Fide Catholica, Chapter iv.

We cannot consider as altogether blameless the silence which purposely leads to the omission or neglect of some of the principles of Christian doctrine, for all the principles come from the same Author and Master, "the Only Begotten Son, Who is in the bosom of the Father."-John i, I8. They are adapted to all times and all nations, as is clearly seen from the words of our Lord to His apostles: "Going, therefore, teach all nations; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all days, even to the end of the world."-Matt. xxviii, 19. Concerning this point the Vatican Council says: "All those things are to be believed with divine and catholic faith which are contained in the Word of God, written or handed down, and which the Church, either by a solemn judgment or by her ordinary and universal magisterium, proposes for belief as having been divinely revealed."-Const. de fide, Chapter iii.

Let it be far from anyone's mind to suppress for any reason any doctrine that has been handed down. Such a policy would tend rather to separate Catholics from the Church than to bring in those who differ

While I agree with you that the battle is over and we lost (short of a Civil War or Sucession) and that gay marriage will be shoved down our throats by the courts, probably at in the next few years. I disagree that the numbers who support gay marriage will keep growing, I think, like abortion (and unlike say, interracial marriage), where opposition is based on strong held religious tenants there is "hard ceiling" for support of gay marriage and come hell or high-water you will have 40% to 45% who will NEVER support it no matter how much the media pushes and browbeats. Again, look at abortion, opposition is essentially unchanged since 1970....

I’m skeptical that a poll with strangers asking other strangers what they think about ‘gay marriage’ over the phone is going to be very accurate at this point. Not there isn’t a sharp trend toward acceptance as anyone can see in the popular vote trends. But polls on this issue almost invariably overstate that acceptance, at least that I have seen when compared to actual vote totals. The privacy of the voting both is different than telling a stranger one doesn’t dig ‘gay marriage.’ I think part of that can be seen in the difference between admitted individual acceptance and the perceived acceptance of fellow members of the same group.

I wonder if a bigger deal was made over civil divorce and remarriage as far as public acceptance if we wouldn’t be in better shape now with ‘gay marriage’ or whatever other impossibility the state declares to be a marriage in the future.

Resistance to abortion is growing. That fight, unlike the homosexual marriage fight, is likely to be won.

I would have headlined this as “A majority of Americans now have chosen to worship Government —NOT God .They have rejected the Holy Bible and the Laws dictated by God Himself, and have chosen to die by Suicide.

They will support it until they see what they actually support. Like the soccer moms who proudly marched for their gay friends and celebrated some victory afterwards with their children, only to be mortified when the leather clad men started kissing and fondling each other in front of the soccer mom’s young children.
