A former pastor of a northwest Indiana mega-church who has admitted having a sexual relationship with an underage parishioner exchanged hundreds of text messages with the girl and told her Jesus Christ sanctioned their relationship, prosecutors say.
The messages are quoted in a memorandum from prosecutors as they argue for a 10-year prison sentence for Jack A. Schaap, who has pleaded guilty to federal charges that he took a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
The memorandum, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Hammond, details how Schaap, 55, "groomed" the girl into having sex with him while he was pastor at the First Baptist Church of Hammond and was counseling her. The girl had turned 17 when the incidents were happening, according to prosecutors.

Pretty far down on the scumbag list. He needs a lot more then 10 yrs.
The bible never condones unmarried sexual relationships. However that said, the “modern” idea of a marriageable age is years more than in the Lord’s own plan. Governments and socialist sociologists have a vested interest in keeping juveniles juvenile as long as possible. It ought to be treated as a plain vanilla fornication.
If they’d just let these pastors get married they wouldn’t have this problem.
What? He is married? Who’d a thunk it?
Why don’t you just shoot him like a rabid dog and get it over with?
If only the Baptist Church allowed their Pastors to marry.
Remind me to never piss you off.
I like my work and take pride in it.
Gotta work slow and deliberately to get it just right.
He probably claims that it’s ok because it’s “not by works.”
Some cursory digging at this place’s website does not turn up any indication that it is associated with the Southern Baptist Convention, but it does have its own private missions arm called “Fundamental Baptist.” In my admittedly limited experience this seems to suggest an indy church with serious wild hairs. Not that being a fighting fundie is bad, this here redneck is one, but you can’t just be a spiritual wild cat loner with no discipline and hope to do very much right. Nobody has ever bothered to trademark the term “Baptist” which also makes it possible for such folks as Westboro (who aren’t even Christian) to use it without interference.
For having sex with a 17 year old? A bit harsh. If she was 10 or something maybe, but 17 is old enough to know better, frankly.
Don’t know why but, I thought she was 10.
In that case 10 years it is.
A pastor grooming a young girl in his church is far more then just fornication.
Where are you?
I like that.
Reminds me of...me.
In the short run, Satan has a lot of wins, to the eternal demise of many of those he pursues. In the long run, Satan loses. Forever.
That’s more than most priests get...
“He probably claims that its ok because its not by works.”
Sola Fide or sola Gratia?
Bitterly clinging too....
It is an independent baptist church. It also has a history of sexual abuse problems, according to Wiki:
“The sermon was called The Polished Shaft, and in the many times that Jack Schaap, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, had delivered it, it was the kind of showstopper that made him a rock star to his flock. (Or would have, had Schaap not habitually railed against the evils of rock music.)
As with most of his sermons at the northwest Indiana megachurchthe 14th largest in the country and the biggest Independent Baptist house of worship in the nationthe message struck as bluntly as a pounded nail: Submit to Gods plan for your life or be snapped like a twig and flung away (as Schaap would demonstrate by cracking a stick over his head, tossing it aside, and barking, Next!).
When you do submit, be prepared to endure excruciating pain. God will hold a metaphorical knife to your throat (as Schaap would illustrate by holding a steel blade against a twig the way an assailant might press on a jugular). Only then, he would growl, will you become a polished shaft: one suitable for Gods bow.
At this point, the sermons climax, Schaap would heave up a high-powered crossbow and fire an arrow into a red X painted on a fake rock a few feet from his pulpit...
... But in July 2010, an hour into the Polished Shaft sermonin a church packed with thousands of teenagers there for a youth conferenceSchaap went further. He lifted a stick in his left hand and a silver cloth in his right. He moved the bottom of the stick near his groin and angled it away from himself. Head thrown back, eyes squeezed shut, mouth gaping, he began rubbing the shaft rapidly with the cloth, up and down, up and down. Ohh! Oh! Ohhhh! Oh! Oh, God, that hurts! he shrieked.
Then, his voice dropping to a guttural whisper, he said, Oh, oh, God. Thanks for what youre making me.
Schaap continued to rub the stickup and down, up and downand converse with God, sometimes angrily, sometimes ecstatically, for more than a minute. What he was doing was unmistakable: simulating masturbation, in front of thousands of children, in the middle of a church service.”
Changed my mind.
Lash him the water wheel of a river boat ...
YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!
Look at post 25 and 29!!
I found this too!
Jesus said, “whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” [Matthew 18:6 RSV]
I’m as serious as a heart attack!
You know what zot? The only reason Jesus said “millstone” is because “Concrete jeans” had not been invented!
God discussed people like this.
I think the phrase “millstone around their neck” was part of the discussion.
My heart grieves for that young woman.
Heh! Concrete jeans or lead shoes. But apparently this preacher didn’t get the message and neither did his congregation. To allow any preacher to get away with this and then cover for him is a failure of the leadership of the congregation.
No other word for it.
Ah, in that case fair enough. Hope his cellmate is called ‘Tiny’ for ironic reasons...
This “pastor” should be defrocked and locked up for a very long time.
Now I’m really angry. I watched some older news articles on this case. Not only was she in counseling with him but it was FOR sexual abuse! This man really is a creep.
Great great grandfather probably lived in IL.
The facts are that sex outside of marriage has long been documented in the scriptures as a BAD thing.
Look at David - a man after GOD’s own heart.
Woe to any lesser mortal that would do anything nearly like that today!
Gotta watch folks from Hancock county...
Well, it’s also abuse of an ecclesiastical post, obviously. And that should be hooted down by all good Christians by all good means, but that part doesn’t spill over into any sort of plausible secular law. Not unless we want to invite Caesar into matters of church discipline, and Satan is clever how he uses Caesar.
But this young girl wouldn’t have even been considered underage by anything close to biblical standards. That’s the point I wished to raise.
