Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly, who is writing an upcoming book titled “Killing Jesus,” proclaimed on his program Wednesday night that “a lot of the Bible is allegorical,” and the New Testament Gospels contradict themselves.
O’Reilly made the remarks during an interview with “Touched by an Angel” star Roma Downey and her husband Mark Burnett, executive producers of “The Bible” TV miniseries which begins this Sunday night on the History Channel.
Downey, who portrays Jesus’ mother Mary in the series, opened the interview by declaring her solid faith in Holy Scripture.
“Bringing the Bible to the screen came with a huge responsibility and one we took very seriously,” Downey said. “We had a great team of scholars and theologians helping us, making sure that we told these stories accurately and truthfully. I’ve been a believer my whole life, and that was very, very important to us. Something else that we wanted to do was to make it really, really cool. You know, we have teenagers at home and [it's] hard to get them to read anything, and one of the goals here was to get this generation interested and excited about Scripture, and I think we’ve been able to achieve that.”...........

The History Channel is not reliable when it comes to Biblical History or anything Christian. They line up fringe “theologians” and other so-called Biblical “experts”. When it comes to the Bible, the History Channel is no different than Hell’s bible (ny slimes)
As long as “bound for hell” Dan Brown isn’t mentioned I’ll be tuned in.

The article never does mention what these supposed “contradictions” are. Generally what the secular world calls contradictory turns out to be complementary. Such as the birth narratives of Matthew and Luke.

He’s right, in a way. But the apparent “contradictions” are what make them authentic. Ask any trial lawyer what it means when multiple witnesses tell the exact same story. It means they are lying and they are in collusion. When the stories are true, they are all slightly different and bring up different details. I like to use this analogy:
Imagine four men describing the same event thusly:
Man number one: A saw a lady driving this bright red convertible.
Man number two: I saw this hot blonde in a completely restored vette.
Man numer three: I saw a sports car doing a beautiful two wheel drift through the corner in a 64 vette.
Man number four: This woman was wearing a dress that matched the color of her car.
Complete story:
This smokin’ hot blond in a red dress was drifting around a corner in a “like new” bright red 1964 corvette convertible.
Thats actually how the bible works, from cover to cover. That is why the interpretation of some scripture can be filled in and amplified by scritures from years or even centuries before. It is the most amazing collection of books ever written, for the obvious reason. ;-)

The Catholic QuandaryOver the years, I have occasionally written about being a practicing Roman Catholic, a fact that sometimes leads to incredulous statements like "YOU go to church?" Somehow, I don't believe the question is a compliment.
This is a tough Holy Week for Catholics, as once again the terrible specter of child molestation is in the air. Driven by a series of articles by the New York Times, the church now faces questions about whether Pope Benedict XVI ignored some past abuse cases when he was a cardinal. The evidence is scant, but damning anyway, because of the previous priest-pedophilia scandals.
A number of Catholics have left the church because of the priestly sins, but not me. From the beginning, in Sister Claudia's first grade class, I understood that the Catholic Church was about Jesus, not Father Flannery. Believe me, I saw so many loons in my Catholic school days that I should be a Buddhist. But it is the theology, not church leadership, that keeps me in the fold.
You may remember that I was a driving force in bringing down the villainous Cardinal Law in Boston, a man who allowed child molesting priests to run wild. When Law was forced to resign, I was happy. But then the late Pope John Paul II gave him a cushy job in Rome, where he remains today. If it were up to me, the cardinal would be in prison.
Even though I respected Pope John Paul's holiness, I was deeply disappointed that he did not meet with molestation victims when he visited the United States in 1999. The pope should have done that simply to show devastated American Catholics, and the victims themselves, that he cared and understood their pain. When I publicly criticized Pope John Paul for avoiding the issue, the Catholic League scorched me. And that's fine. They are entitled to their opinion.
Throughout it all, however, I stayed with the church. If you cut through all the bull, the doctrines of treating others as you want to be treated, forgiveness and redemption, and charity for all stand the test of time. Even if the atheists are right and there is no God, the philosophy of Jesus is full-force positive. Live the way he lived, and the world will be a better place.
The actions of others must be considered, of course. But I like this analogy: We've had some pretty bad leaders in America, right? Do they make you want to renounce your citizenship? The United States is not the people who lead it. It is all of us.
Same thing with the Catholic Church. It's not corrupt priests or apathetic leaders in Rome. It's Jesus and his followers, the folks who sit in the pews on Sunday. And that's good enough for me.
Actually, when I was watching this last night I thought of a book titled “Killing the Constitution.” It will go through the entire Constitutional process and then detail over the decades how the leftists and progressives have twisted and bastardized every amendment to suit their ends, thus killing a Constitutional Republic. What do you think?

I only watch now college sports, weather, some current events, and faith based shows.
And even the so-called “muse of political correctness” is starting to show cracks, getting ever closer to coming apart.
I think we need more revival in this country than revolution. That if we are not right with God, not grounded on good values... We will not be worthy or capable of turning this country around.
Saw an interview with Mark Burnett and his wife on Fox. Sounds like he’s a believer and I’m glad he’s using his talent and wealth to share about God. Hope he does it well.
Riley should have enough sense to stick to stuff he knows a tiny smidgeon about, instead of messing around with stuff he knows absolutely nothing about.

Some people just have to hate, apparently, and will spout off against the Church based on no actual factual knowledge.
As a Christian, I now look at politics through this lens, “where would the early church have been if they had put their faith in Rome?”
Good example. Here is one I use:
True story. I was out doing a painting in a field when I was attacked by the land owner’s great dane. I was able to fend him off using my folded camp chair until the owner finally called him off. My camp chair still has the teeth marks...this is how I usually tell the story. Other times, I might include the fact that there was a second smaller border collie attacking me at the same time using a flanking maneuver.
Now read the gospels about blind Bartimaeus. One gospel says that there were two blind men and the other only records one. It seems like a contradiction until you realize...that is how people tell stories. One emphasizes what he thinks is important, and the other does the same.
Geez...I thought I had a good handle on the gross size of BOR’s ego but I see I was off by several orders of magnitude! I think your example is better, and not just because it is personal.
I can’t believe that people seriously stop going to church because of Priests who turn out bad. My entire family still go every week. It is such a weird thing to me that a person would stop doing something they believe because of others. Good Lord. How many houses burn down every year but that doesn’t stop me from buying a home. How many teachers are found bad, that doesn’t stop people from sending their kids to school. How many people end up with food poisoning that doesn’t stop people from eating. Such a strange world we live in.
I’d like to know why O’Reilly and Dugard skipped “Killing [James] Garfield” and “Killing McKinley.” -:)

You have described a very useful component of a good hermeneutic. Thank you.
To expand on this concept, the Bible also utilizes something similar to the following:
Boy sees girl at school
Boy thinks girl is wonderful
Boy meets girl in store
Girl laughs at boy’s attempts to chat
Boy angrily leaves store
Boy hates girl
Now, does the boy like the girl? Well, the answer is…it depends. It depends upon where in the story you are. In the second line? Then “yes”. In the last line? Then “no”. If the Bible is like this tiny historic novel, it too requires that one be cognizant of where one is along the story line. For example, did Paul kill Christians? Yes, up to Acts 9, then “no” after that.
Many people read the Bible as if it were a spiritual encyclopedia (flat & topical). It is not. It is structured more like a historical novel: It is true in all respects, but hung on a “story line”.
This most radically affects the meaning when it comes to the four Gospels. At what point are we in the story? Are Gentiles included in the remarks Jesus is making? Has the New Covenant been instituted yet? Is He teaching “Christianity” or “Judaism” (Grace or Law)?
If a reader can keep the flow of the story in mind, these questions are easily answered.

Yipes! Well, they took me in, I guess, just based on their remarks about it. I don’t follow show biz news.
You need to go to the original Hebrew and Greek and these “contradictions” resolve themselves. For example, Deut 5:17 (as well as the same quote from Ex 20:13) says thou shall not “murder”. (kill apart from the sanction of God). This is not inconsistent with the death penalty God rightfully imposes on many breaches of his law. Just as modern day death penalties do not conflct with the sixth commandment - as Paul tacitly acknowledged in Romans 13.
My cable box is tuned to the History Channels more often than not these days.

I’ll add another analogy that I use. Some think it is brilliant and others think it is idiotic, but here goes:
A book is like a glass photographic plate. If you shatter it, each piece contains a part of the image/story.
The bible is like a glass plate containing a hologram. If you shatter it, each piece contains the entire image/story - from a specific perspective.
