My own legal name is a nickname for a more formal name. My Mom thought the formal name was too long and they would call me the nickname anyway, so why bother naming me the formal name. A good friend in high school was saddled with, as the legal name on his birth certificate, "Timmy".
Needless to say, he fixed it when he was old enough.
