Notre Dame Announces Gay, ‘Allies’ Student Group
The Cardinal Newman Society ^ | 12/5/12 | Matthew Archbold

In what the University of Notre Dame’s student newspaper is calling “a historic decision,” the University announced plans for a University- recognized homosexual student organization as well as a full-time student development staff position focused on LGBTQ issues.

The announcement was made as the result of a long review of the University’s policies. According to the student newspaper, Fr. John Jenkins, the president of the university, said that the plan “grows out of our mission as a Catholic university” and is “directed by that fundamental mission in a profound way.”

But although the plan describes the student organization as acting consistent with Catholic teaching, Fr. Jenkins seemed to indicate some doubt about how closely it will be regulated:

Jenkins said the organization’s roots in Church teaching had a broad practical impact, but these roots are not meant to serve as a basis for limitations the University could theoretically impose on the group. “It’s a rich teaching about the role of sexuality, about intimacy, about human relations, about responsibilities to the community, about relationships to the Church,” Jenkins said. “To put this in a ‘Well you can do this, you can’t do that,’ is to distort the issue.”

Moreover, at least one Vatican official has expressed reservations about a Catholic college organizing any student activity centered on homosexuality. In 1992 Cardinal Pio Laghi, then-Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, opposed a homosexual club at Seattle University: “At a Catholic university, support can be given only to Catholic teaching on homosexuality and Catholic pastoral practice to help homosexual persons morally, ascetically, and spiritually . . . The university’s responsibilities towards homosexual persons, doctrinally and pastorally, should find their expression in courses in Catholic theology.”

So the “L” is now listed in front of the G in “LGBTQ”? Was a focus group study performed? And it is about time the Q's get recognized, sometimes they are forgotten and likely discriminated against in the LGBT world; now, they have inclusion...until the next letter.

Who cares about gay people. The fact that babies are being murdered every day seems to be about five orders of magnitude more important of a social issue.

Fr Jenkins talks a lot but says virtually nothing - he makes grandios statements but does not give voice to truth.

Let me ask the simplest of questions is homosexuality and the homosexual act a sin or not? If the “club” was formed on the basis of understanding that it is indeed a sin then the “club” could be a help through the understanding of truth and pure doctrine.

I doubt that it is rather it is there to lessen the sin and promote the culture!

Would they sanction a heterosexual student group?

There simply isn’t a cornerstone for morality in this country any more. It is amazing seemingly intelligent people bend over backwards to elevate a perverse sexual desire. To be fair, since that is what liberals are all about, shouldn’t there be student groups for pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiallity, etc.

Actually, I think they're taunting the Pope because they come out with something like this right after anything he does to try and get things back on the right track.

On the 4th Benedict puts out, “The Service of Charity” and here we have an little announcement from ND with far more of a press release than it deserves. I think they want a fight over whether or not they can call themselves Catholic and are trying to egg it on.

Has anyone asked the Bs if they want to be lumped in with the Qs? What about the Ts? What if the Ts like the Ls but not the Gs?

They lost me when they honored Obozo and had the pro-lifers arrested when he spoke there.
