40 Days for Life kicks off February 22 in 258 locations!

 40 Days for Life locations

On February 22, the next 40 Days for Life campaign begins in 258 locations in the United States, Canada, England, Australia and Spain. Sign up for campaign updates with the box at the upper right ... pray and fast for an end to abortion ... and see the list of locations to find -- and get involved -- in the campaign nearest you!

FIVE more abortion centers close following 40 Days for Life

40 Days for Life in Storm Lake, Iowa

On March 1, the Planned Parenthood abortion center in Storm Lake, Iowa will shut its doors. Just last fall, this location was the site of a 40 Days for Life vigil, coordinated by Sue Thayer – who once cerved as manager of that very facility ... until she was fired! Be sure to see Sue's story.

40 Days for Life in Saginaw, Michigan

Earlier, we received word from the Michigan attorney general’s office that TWO abortion centers which have been sites of multiple 40 Days for Life campaigns — in Lansing and Saginaw — have been permanently CLOSED after they were found to be operating illegally. A judge ordered them shut down PERMANENTLY.

Then, it was announced that GYN Special Services Clinic, located in Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, would be closing its doors. Brian Gibson of Pro-Life Action Ministries, the 40 Days for Life coordinator in the Twin Cities area, describes the closure -- and the impact of 40 Days for Life -- in this short video. (on the site)

40 Days for Life in Rockford, Illinois

Finally, it was announced that an abortion center in Rockford, Illinois -- the site of three 40 Days for Life vigils as well as many years of constant prayer by faithful volunteers -- had closed its doors forever. In announcing the closure, the facility's owners said it was clear that the community no longer supported the abortion business.

With the closure of the Storm Lake Planned Parenthood center, this will now make 21 abortion centers that have shut down during or following 40 Days for Life campaigns outside their doors. To God be the glory, and congratulations to all the pro-life groups and individuals in these cities whose years of fervent prayers and faithful efforts have been rewarded!

What 40 Days for Life has witnessed (so far!)

40 Days for Life in Glendale, California

There have now been nine coordinated 40 Days for Life campaigns since 2007, mobilizing people of faith and conscience in 422 cities across the United States and Canada, plus communities in Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Belize, Denmark, England, Georgia, Germany, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Puerto Rico and Spain.

During these unified efforts, participants witnessed countless blessings from God:

After so many years of legalized abortion, many people of faith are experiencing a renewed sense of HOPE!

Take the leap of faith and get involved with 40 Days for Life

Have you been to pray at a 40 Days for Life vigil yet? You may ask, “What do I do?” or “What sign should I bring?” The answer is simple; the only sign you really need to bring is yourself, for you represent God’s love.

Concern about going to pray at the abortion facility is common — and normal. 40 Days for Life campaign director Shawn Carney shared some thoughts at the national Students for Life conference.

Prayer and fasting

40 Days for Life in Little Rock, Arkansas

Before getting involved with the 40 Days for Life campaign, please remember that prayer and fasting are the foundation.

If there is no abortion facility in your town, praise God!

But wherever you are or whatever you're doing, you can pray to end abortion.

You can also pray for God's guidance for those involved in prayer vigils and pro-life action around the country. And please consider fasting. Some people are unable to fast from food for health reasons; that's understandable. Fasting simply involves renouncing an activity that can put a barrier between you and God. It could be television, the internet, chocolate, coffee, etc. You really can do without it. Take the time you usually spend in those activities and give it back to God.

To help guide your prayer, we have a 40-day series of devotionals that accompany the 40 Days for Life campaign. They are all posted for your convenience. You can still pray, even if a formal campaign is not currently being conducted. God will use your 40-day commitment to prayer in some way, in some fashion.

Specific prayer requests are also included in the 40 Days for Life e-mail updates. Please use the form on this page to receive these important messages.

Constant vigil

40 Days for Life in Flagstaff, Arizona

The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a 40-day, round-the-clock prayer vigil outside a Planned Parenthood center or other abortion facility in your community.

Those who are called to stand witness maintain a peaceful and educational presence.

This 24-hour-a-day presence send a powerful message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion. It also serves as a call to repentance for those who work at the abortion center and those who patronize the facility.

If you do not have an abortion facility or Planned Parenthood office in your town, you can still conduct 40 Days for Life. However, you will need to select a different location which has some strategic significance ... perhaps near city hall, a courthouse, or a highly visible intersection.

Community outreach

40 Days for Life in Greenville, South Carolina

During 40 Days for Life, the pro-life message is proactively taken to every corner of your community. This can identify hundreds, or even thousands, of pro-life supporters.

A door-to-door petition and education drive reaches out to every household in your town or city. Informational flyers are distributed in neighborhoods to raise awareness about the local crisis of abortion. Citizens are invited to sign a petition of support for the sanctity of human life, and people are given the opportunity to visibly show their support for 40 Days for Life by wearing wristbands, placing signs in their yards, or displaying bumper stickers on their vehicles.

These people can then be encouraged to pray and join in local pro-life efforts.

Church involvement begins by meeting with local pastors, other church leaders, and members of different congregations. The Body of Christ is invited to pray together and participate in 40 Days for Life, uniting in one focused mission that can save lives and make an eternal impact.

Media outreach is conducted through carefully targeted news stories, talk shows, editorials, and letters to the editor. This enables you to get the pro-life message out to many people who would never see the inside of a local church.

If your community has a college campus, many students can be impacted through an intense 40-day campus outreach. This can consist of on-campus activities such as flyer raids, sidewalk chalking, petition drives and table displays, as permitted.

Local leadership with 40 Days for Life

40 Days for Life in Halifax, Nova Scotia

40 Days for Life is primarily a local campaign. Yes, there is a national team that provides information, resources and encouragement, but all campaigns are based at the local level. Each community knows best when it comes to countering the damage abortion has caused in each individual city and town.

No one is appointed as a local 40 Days for Life leader; in each community, someone must step up and accept the challenge.

The campaign is also a group effort. There needs to be a main coordinator, but there is a whole level of duties and responsibilities that must be filled in addition to the director's position:

  • Prayer coordinator
  • Vigil coordinator
  • Outreach coordinator
  • Event coordinator
  • Church coordinator
  • Communications coordinator
  • And possibly others, depending on your local needs.

A line from Scripture comes to mind: "Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will." Please pray for discernment and guidance. 40 Days for Life won't happen without somebody. "Somebody" could be you!

Day of Preparation - February 21

Intention:

For God’s blessing upon the coming 40 Days for Life campaign.

Scripture:

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land.

- 2 Chronicles 7:14

Reflection:

Not unlike God's chosen people of Israel, we must humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways, if we expect God to hear from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land. The need for repentance has not been greater since the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade in 1973. The number one cause of death in America is the needless sacrifice of our children at the altar of convenience called abortion. Conservative estimates put the number of deaths at nearly 48 million.

And lest we think this is an issue outside the church walls, 43 percent of women obtaining abortions identify themselves as Protestant, and 27 percent identify themselves as Catholic. One in four women has at least one abortion by the age of 45 -- both non-Christian and Christian alike. Where was the voice of Truth -- the church?

Mary Comm of In Our Midst Ministries, Inc. sums up the issue best as she writes, "We (the church) have been an unintentional accomplice to the millions of lives lost and to the multiplied millions of lives devastated by abortion. We didn't want them to abort. We didn't mean for them to abort. But, because of our lack of knowledge, because of our fear, we have continued to stand by and do nothing. We, God's hands and feet in this dark and hurting world, have been unintentional, unknowledgeable accomplice, but an accomplice nonetheless."

May today mark the beginning of change within the church, as God's people, in unity, seek His forgiveness.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we have turned our backs on you and your principles in your Word. We have allowed man to usurp Your role as God over life and the number of our days. But we come to you in brokenness and repentance over our sin. We cry out for Your mercy and ask you to remove the scourge of abortion from our land. Use us as your vessels, Lord, to bring the light of Your Truth to our nation once again. Because of Christ we pray, amen.

Are you ready to be part of something BIG?

Are you ready to pray and fast, stand in peaceful vigil,
change hearts and minds — and save lives?

If so, it will require sacrifice ... but it will be
worth it.

Tomorrow, you have the opportunity to join the largest
spring 40 Days for Life campaign in history, as it kicks
off in 258 cities across America and around the world!

Find the location nearest you:

http://40daysforlife.com/location

When we conducted the first 40 Days for Life campaign
in College Station, Texas, back in 2004, if you had
told me that 40 Days for Life would spread around the
globe ... I wouldn’t have believed it.

We thought there would be ONE — and only one —
40 Days for Life campaign. EVER.

Thankfully, God’s plans were bigger than ours ... and
40 Days for Life has now been conducted in hundreds of
cities and towns across all 50 American states — and
thirteen other countries.

One of those countries where 40 Days for Life is making
a profound impact is England. This spring, there will
be four local campaigns conducted across Great Britain.

A few days ago, they flew 40 Days for Life national
director David Bereit and me “across the pond” to help
kick off campaigns in London, Birmingham and Manchester.

We were amazed to see how God has inspired thousands
of people across the UK to pray and fast, stand in
peaceful vigil and participate in community outreach ...

... and now YOU can see the big picture by watching this
brand-new 15-minute video of how 40 Days for Life is
positively impacting England:

http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=2657

As I said ... this is BIG. And you can be a part.

40 Days for Life is God’s work — but in order to make
this happen, He needs YOU!

We start tomorrow. Will you be there?

Day 1 - February 22

Intention:

That we may use these 40 Days for Life to plead for God's mercy and grace upon all those involved in the sin of abortion.

Scripture:

Blow the trumpet in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an assembly. Gather the people, notify the congregation. Assemble the elders; gather the children and the infants at the breast… Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep and say, "Spare, O Lord, your people."

-- Joel 2:15-17

Reflection:

The toll of abortion cannot be measured. We hear estimates of almost 50 million innocent victims, but that's only one aspect of the harm that has unfolded in abortion's wake. There are also the mothers and fathers of these millions, as well as the grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins. Unborn lives destroyed. Lives of the living shattered.

It's overwhelming and depressing, but even in the midst of such unfathomable darkness, the church teaches us to have hope. Yes, it was indeed Calvary that followed Christ's 40 days in the desert, but without Calvary there would have been no Resurrection - His victory over death that opened the gates of heaven to those who believe in and follow Him.

The psalmist encourages us to go humbly before God as we seek His will: "A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me… Give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustain in me… O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise" (Psalm 51:12, 14, 17).

We are called to be God's messengers; or as the Apostle Paul told the Corinthians: "We are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20). That is the true message to all we encounter at the abortion centers and in our communities who have been deceived by the Culture of Death. We don't bring condemnation; we bring God's good news.

Prayer:

Lord, we ask for the strength, courage, wisdom, determination and stamina to carry out this mission according to Your will. Guide us, we pray, as we go forth and proclaim Your truth, always doing so with a spirit of love and compassion, as was demonstrated to us by Your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray, amen.

Communications Director, 40 Days for Life

Great job! Just walk back and forth in front of the place and pray. I usually just pray and/or say a Rosary for Life.

It’s Day 1 and 40 Days for Life is off to a fast start!

I have spoken at kickoff events in three cities. Our
national director, David Bereit is speaking in College
Station, Texas tonight to launch the 10th campaign
there since he and I led the first-ever 40 Days for
Life in 2004.

Be part of this 40-day journey! Just follow this link
to the list of 258 campaign locations and find the one
nearest you:

http://40daysforlife.com/location.cfm

Let me tell you about a couple of the cities I’ve
visited, and add a quick story about another location.

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

Nikki in Pittsburgh has led previous campaigns, but she
noted an increased level of enthusiasm this spring. She
said volunteers already had 80 percent of the vigil hours
filled — BEFORE the campaign even started!

Hundreds of people attended the kickoff event at a local
Presbyterian church. Pastors and priests from several
different churches spoke, along with a woman who shared
her testimony about her abortion experience.

The event ended with a procession to Planned Parenthood’s
downtown Pittsburgh facility for a candlelight vigil.

To see some photos of the kickoff event in Pittsburgh —
and for a link to campaign coverage in the local newspaper
— please go to:

http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=2669

CLEVELAND, OHIO

Amy and Renee in Cleveland have worked hard to get more
churches involved this spring. Grace Church, a large
evangelical congregation, offered to host Cleveland’s
kickoff event.

Grace’s pastor led the opening prayer and talked about
how powerful 40 Days for Life has been in changing the
hearts of those who work in the abortion industry.

He also noted that it was a blessing to have so many
Evangelical, Catholic and Protestant Christians come
together to speak up for those who cannot speak for
themselves.

Volunteers have already stepped forward to fill many
of the vigil hours. Amy and Renee even gave away free
handwarmers to everyone who committed to pray at least
five hours per week in the Cleveland cold.

PENSACOLA, FLORIDA

The abortion center in Pensacola relocated recently
and just started taking appointments again about a week
ago. In preparation for the 40 Days for Life campaign,
volunteers have already been praying at the new site.

So far, there have been very few abortion appointments.
Workers are standing around outside the building with
nothing to do. One day, the abortionist left after only
two hours.

Best of all, two babies were saved during the week prior
to the campaign!

“This is assurance that your prayer, fasting and vigil
have already called down all the powers of heaven upon
this re-opened place of death,” said one volunteer.
“And 40 Days for Life has not yet even begun! Wow! It
is so exciting, anticipating all the wonderful miracles
God has in store for this 40-day campaign.”

Day 2 - February 23

Intention:

May the King of the Universe, who entered this world as a helpless infant, give us the humility to be healed.

Scripture:

My power is made perfect in weakness.

--2 Corinthians 12:9

Reflection:

The great mystery of the Humility of God is very near and dear to the mission of those serving in pro life and in a special way, post abortion ministries across this nation. For those wounded by their participation in abortion, the door to healing often feels like crossing an abyss of great fear: fear of judgment, fear of being torn apart by the pain, by self hatred and rage at those who hurt and abandoned you, and manipulated you in your time of temptation. For men in particular, entering the unknown waters of emotional vulnerability, so necessary to healing calls for a different kind of courage that feels deceptively like weakness.

The door to healing is humility. It is born in the inability to no longer control the pain, to live with the consequences of that tragic decision to reject life. The hearts cries out, "I have committed a grave offense against my Creator and I am consumed by regret, grief and sorrow!"

During these forty days let us pray for all who have participated in abortion and with love call them to healing and reconciliation. With healing these women and men can become as John Paul II proclaimed in the Gospel of Life, "the most eloquent defenders of everyone's right to life."

Jesus proclaimed, "I am the Vine, you are the branches" (John 15:5). To bear the greatest fruit, the branches must be pruned. Each level of pruning of the vine requires a deeper level of humility so that we can abandon ourselves to His will. This is not a lofty theological concept as much as it is an earthy experience of pulling weeds, tilling rocky soil, pruning and healing the vines. "If a man wishes to come after me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross, and begin to follow in my footsteps" (Matthew 16:24).

Prayer:

Lord, during these forty days, we ask that with each day of this sacred vigil, everything in us that separates us from your perfect will would be pruned from our hearts and souls. In this blessed freedom may we experience a powerful anointing of your Holy Spirit. Filled with confidence and trust may we proclaim with the mother of Jesus, "Let it be done to me, according to your Word."

I’m home for a few days — but David Bereit, 40 Days
for Life’s national director, is on the road right now
in Texas.

Last night, David spoke at the record TENTH campaign
kickoff event in Bryan/College Station. He’s visiting
the 40 Days for Life location in McKinney, Texas today.

>From Bryan/College Station back in 2004, we’ve seen
God take 40 Days for Life to some far away (and some
very cold) places. Here are a couple of stories from
local campaigns facing challenging situations.

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

We refer to the current 40 Days for Life events as the
“spring” campaign. But don’t tell that to the folks in
Alaska! Anchorage has received more than 100 inches of
snowfall already this winter. And it isn’t over yet.

Haylee Shields, the local coordinator, sent before-and-
after photos showing the sidewalk in front of Planned
Parenthood — before and after some of the 8-foot
snowdrifts were plowed away.

All that snow has done nothing to deter the spirit of
the volunteers taking part in 40 Days for Life.

“We’re gearing up and getting excited for what could be
the best campaign we’ve ever had,” Haylee said.

“We have been spending time together in prayer, and we
are trusting the Lord to do great things as we follow
His will.”

Yes, it’s cold. And yes, there’s a WHOLE LOT of snow.
But many are answering the call to take a public stand
against the evil of abortion.

“Please remember that we are the visible sign that the
church of God will not stand idly by while abortions
are being committed in our communities,” Haylee told
local volunteers. “You can make a difference in this
fight for life!”

To see some photos of the kickoff event — and the snow
— in Anchorage, please go to:

http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=2686

RENO, NEVADA

The Reno/Tahoe area has been faithfully involved in
nearly every coordinated 40 Days for Life campaign.
But they’d never gotten any media attention — until now.

This time, the campaign kickoff event generated several
reports from two local newspapers and one TV station.

The event featured testimony from a woman who’d had
three abortions when she was younger — including one
at the facility where the 40 Days for Life vigil is
taking place in Reno. “I have a responsibility to speak
the truth,” she said. “Every time we have the
opportunity to speak the truth, it’s a gift.”

This abortion center features a series of signs along
its fence, all of them designed to encourage prayer
volunteers to go home. One reads, “Protesters are
terrorists.” That’s one of the milder ones.

In the past, the abortionist has used a sound system
to blare out obscene music. He has also turned on a
sprinkler system during the prayer vigils. The
sprinklers have been pointed directly at the sidewalk
where the volunteers conduct their campaign.

But they will continue to stand and pray.

“We are going to pray for an end to abortion in our
country,” one local pastor told the crowd. “We are
going to appeal to the divine source to bring about a
change of hearts and minds of the people of this land.”

Day 3 - February 24

Intention:

Pray for your local pregnancy help center: for those who answer calls from women considering abortion, those who provide ultrasounds, and those who personally help mothers prepare to parent or place for adoption.

Scripture:

Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

--Psalm 82:4

Reflection:

When a woman arrives at her local pregnancy help center, the hard work of "rescuing the weak" begins. They listen to her. What desperate circumstance is driving her? They act. A professional ultrasound and medical care is provided. They pray, "God use us." Then, they take up her burdens and work towards life. It is cross-bearing for the child-bearing.

Recently, I prayed for one volunteer who was working with one mother in her struggle. Here is what "rescue the weak" looked like in this one case:

  • Aug 3: She made an appoint-ment for Thursday to get an abortion and while she feels terrible about it, she also feels like she has no choice. Pray that her heart is changed!
  • Aug 10: She is 12 weeks along but missed her appointment. She had some good conversa-tions with people at the preg-nancy center. She is now considering adoption.
  • Aug 13: Things are down again. She now has an abortion scheduled for Monday. Pray!
  • Aug 17: Missed appointment! God is working in her life.
  • Sept 1: We've hit another rocky period. She has an abortion scheduled for tomorrow. She found out today that her parents are planning a trip to visit her and she is panicking.
  • Sept 15: Missed third appointment. But feels like she has no choice. Please pray today.
  • Sept 20: She fears her parents but has agreed to another ultrasound (a breakthrough).
  • Sept 22: I was there with her for her ultrasound. She saw her baby moving and made the realization that she wants to carry her baby.

Please keep praying against attack by the enemy. We are overwhelmed by seeing God's hand move in this situation and are so very thankful for the prayers lifted up by each one of you. God is good!

Prayer:

Father, we praise you for this one sister who gave herself, heart and soul, to rescue this one mother and baby. O may you empower the hundreds more today who are serving in our pregnancy help centers. Grant those answering calls, providing ultrasound and following up with a bold spirit of truth, love and perseverance.

Vice President, Heartbeat International

Every day new stories are written in this spiritual battle. It is a wonderful thing to be able to affect the outcomes in some small way through our prayers and our witnessing. I’m hopeful that others will come join the defense of the unborn wherever there is an abortion mill or wherever there is a need. Never underestimate what one single person (you) can contribute.

have helped generate a spirit of Christian unity ...
and media coverage, too!

Here are two great examples, including one from a
first-time campaign in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

JACKSONVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA

The first 40 Days for Life campaign in Jacksonville,
North Carolina is already attracting a lot of attention
from pro-lifers, from the abortion center’s owner,
from the police chief — and the media.

Local coordinator Elizabeth DeLong was quite clear in
her message that 40 Days for Life is a prayer vigil.
“We will be praying for Dr. Crist (the facility’s owner)
and for his patients,” she told reporters. “This will
be peaceful.”

The owner went on camera with a litany of pro-abortion
talking points, insisting that abortion is necessary in
cases of rape, incest and fetal deformity ... and also
insisting that his business is “not an abortion clinic”
because that’s only a small part of what he does.

“It is an abortion clinic,” Elizabeth responded. “They
do abortions there. We’re here to bring healing to our
city. We’re there to pray. We’re there to love the clients.”

The owner retorted, “They’re not going to turn anybody
around.” Let’s all pray that women in Jacksonville —
and everywhere — DO choose life for their children.

BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT

Leaders of several faith communities got together to
begin the 40 Days for Life campaign in Bridgeport,
first gathering at a local church and then walking
to the abortion center, where the campaign vigil will
be conducted, for additional prayers and blessings.

Bishop William Lori of the Bridgeport Catholic diocese,
Rev. Christopher Leighton of St. Paul Episcopal Church
and Pastor Hector Muniz of Lighthouse Church all
provided moving words as more than 200 gathered to
launch the spring campaign.

“Through our concerted efforts,” said Christine in
Bridgeport, “we are praying that this will be another
clinic to close down during the 40 Days for Life.”

SPECIAL PRAYER REQUEST

I’m not able to tell you where this is happening, but
please keep these people in your prayers.

Volunteers have given some abortion facility workers
copies of the book “Unplanned” — Abby Johnson’s story
of how she witnessed an ultrasound abortion ... and
quit her job as director of the Planned Parenthood
abortion center in College Station, Texas.

It appears that several of these employees have read
the book — and have taken its message to heart.

Some have quit their jobs! More are thinking about it.
So please pray that those who have left the abortion
business may find new employment, and that others will
find the courage to follow them out the door.
