In the past five years - before our very eyes - we have seen the nearly complete erosion and virtual extinction of conservative policies and programs in US politics. It seems that The United States is increasingly becoming more like a secular socialist State than the Representative Republic of "In God We Trust" that it was founded upon. Our Judean-Christian heritage, morality and values do not dominate our culture and society as they once did. Another reality is that many have never known any other kind of society than what presently exists. Accountability, responsibility and virtue are “hisses and by-words” in Hollywood, the Media Establishment, College/University Campuses and in Washington D.C. In the Ivory Tower realms of the Society Elite, there is also scoffing. These groups on the Left hate “nominal” Christianity and hate even more true Biblical Christianity. They seek to slander Christianity – and especially Christians - at every opportunity while they defend all sorts of godlessness, immorality and vice. There is, however, a “new wave” in the arena of talk media led by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, etc., who lead the current fight for conservatism. These are able to counter the mainstream Media's secular leftist liberal bent, but they are unable to stop the erosion and corrosion in secular leftist leaning Washington D.C. What are conservatives to do? Many conservatives are frustrated, many try to be optimistic, many are frightened, and many have just plain given up.

To be accurate, "In God We Trust" did not become the official motto of the United States until 1956. (The phrase itself did not appear on US currency until shortly after the Civil War). Until 1956, E pluribus unum (Out of many, one) was considered the national motto, although it wasn't official, because it appeared on the official seal.

I frankly believe that Christians and Jews no longer share the same morals and values and haven't for many years. The 10 Commandments have been dead and buried at our public schools for two or three generations. Many, whose heritage is Christian, no longer attend church. Do these non-attenders consider themselves Christians? I've also noticed that for some churches, their high holy days are right before elections where parking lots are overflowing with cars loaded with bumper stickers for leftists. The sophisticated (Hollywood and Washington) seem to use God as a tool to intimidate or ridicule believers. I miss the Christian America I was raised in. It no longer exists. And the more America has changed, the less hope there is.

Actually it is the lack of Godliness. People cannot be free if the is no guiding construct in their lives. As God was pushed out of the public square a vacuum was left. Natural Law does not allow a vacuum. Like the man who had demons cast out, but failed to turn to God, his spirit was again corrupted. This time by seven more demons.

As Americans we must believe in God outside of politics if we are to remain a free people.

Divorce is the main reason for the fall of the United States and the moral decay. FREEPERS will not agree but here it is. Women who divorced their husbands found it difficult to survive on one income or what the ex’s sent so they started to qualify for freebies. Later once divorce was accepted, women started to think...why have a husband when divorce is 50 percent let’s just have a baby without one...and so it goes...down hill and fast. Divorce is the root of all evil in this country. NOBODY can deny this so don’t even try.

You are entitled to your opinion, however one does not have to be religious or a Christian to be a good conservative. To catagorize non-Christian conservatives as “bankrupt” is derogatory and counter productive.

I have no problem with believers, but they seem to have a problem with people like me. I didn’t start this, the believers did.

Fisherman, you are what is termed a "drive by poster" - you post a controversial article and then disappear, declining to respond to the thread.

There are some conservatives who don't believe in God.

There are also some Bible-believing, pro-family, pro-life Christians who, once they get into the voting booth, pull the lever for more government cheese. Every time.

I suspect that the latter outnumber the former ten to one, but oddly enough the Christian conservatives here on FR seem to be much more upset about the first group.

This is one of the reasons the republican party left me. I want a laissez-faire government. I am Eastern Orthodox and would prefer to be left alone to worship as I please.

I don’t have a problem with “in God we trust,” but these people are saying that without agreeing to evangelical protestant visions of righteousness we can’t be conservatives and, presumably, good Americans. That sounds more like the dictatorial bs from the left.

Yeah sure, that's what's needed. A Republican candidate for president to say he's disregarding the constitution in favor of the bible. We'll win in 2012 for sure. (smirk)

There's nothing wrong with being a devout Christian and running for office. There's everything wrong with telling a country with millions of voters who aren't Christian that you're going base all your governmental decisions on what's in the bible. My advice is to tell politicians to seek guidance in the constitution. Many of them seem to have a dim understanding of that.

You are correct sir. . .our founding documents base our nation upon transcendent principles that are bequeathed to us by God. . however, a faith in God is not required because the founders wisely emphasized that these truths were "self-evident." It is a subtlety that sometimes confuses. Secularists declare that God has nothing to do with American founding principles while many fundamental Christians assert that America is strictly a Christian nation. The truth is that God is the source of "the American Creed" and our values are to flow from that source. . .religious faith is helpful but not essential to the practice of good citizenship. What is essential is the practice of those transcendent principles that stand as the foundation of good citizenship, regardless of one's perception of their origin.

Well intended religious people who use their religion to attempt to dictate and control others, thus depriving them of their freedoms are just as much to be feared AND RESISTED as the godless who would also use their belief system to deprive others of freedom.

AMEN! I thought Christians were to be loving and gracious...and to warmly “spread the word”. The hatred of others not Christian is overwhelming and most definitely the opposite of what I would expect to see coming from a Christian.

Lets not overreact here. The OP implied that non religious conservatives were less valued than religious ones, but I detected no hatred.
I think post 16 is on the money. The guy was a drive by poster who has been too cowardly or uninterested to defend his OP.

I’m not over reacting and I’m not only speaking of the OP here. It’s rampant and even rears its ugly head on threads that have nothing to do with religion per se. But somehow it keeps creeping in.

Do you think that it’s the Republican Party? Most party regulars reject all conservatism, including the religious, as well as the libertarians. If the GOP has left me, it’s because they promise better and cheaper big government, not Christian government. I want much smaller government, run by moral people.

The people who think that to be a conservative you have to be an evangalical Christian are mostly an annoyance, rather than any sort of threat, and they are fun to tweak, as I have in this thread, almost as much fun as tweaking liberals.

I reply to as many as I can. I love the debate and the interaction by the Freepers. I also love the challenge that I receive from them that strengthens my faith!

If you are a conservative that does not believe in Almighty God (which I believe is an oxy - moron)... then so be it… I will not take offence that you are godless (Psalm 14:1).

The Gov. cheese pulling “Christians” usually are the ones who are Liberal Christians who believe more in the Social gospel then the Biblical Gospel of Redemption (1 Cor 15:2-4).. I love cheese but not Gov. cheese..

My friend how can a rational individual say they believe not in the Creator of all..?

If you read the post you would see that is not what we were stating. Is Mark Levin perfect or righteous? No.. none of us are Romans 3:23. Then you, I, and the beloved Mark Levin need the righteousness that the Messiah of Israel has provided to all who will but their trust in Him. Either we believe that or we do not. Either it is reality or not. The reality is that we need a Savior to enter into eternity not conservatism. I hope you see what I am trying to say. I love Mark Levin He is a great American!

The way you label “Religious” sounds like to me.. that you just see it as an ideology or philosophy(relativistic) instead of a reality. Are you absolutely perfect?? No.. your not.. no one is… including me. (Rom 3:23) That was the heart of the post. How will you stand before Almighty God imperfect when you need to be absolutely perfect? You won’t.

Then you and I and the world need the perfection that Almighty God has provided in His Son Jesus Christ.

I really do not care what you believe, or whether you believe, or what or how you think others should believe. Religious beliefs are not relevant to the topic of conservatism. Conserving (or restoring) the constitional republic are relevant. If our constitution survives, your freedom to worship as you please will continue to be protected. Otherwise, that freedom will disappear for you as well as others for whom you now have only contempt.

By injecting your personal narrow-minded beliefs into a conservative political website whose members hold a wide variety of religious beliefs, your intent is clearly to be divisive rather than uniting.

You can search Jefferson's letters where he repeatedly wrote of the same sort of divisive pettiness caused by the clerics of his day, during a similar historically critical time for the nation.

Sorry -- the phrase "In God We Trust" does not appear in the Declaration of Independence. You can check out the full text of the document here.

Are you thinking of one of the other founding documents?

DON’T TELL ME WHAT I CAN OR CAN’T POST. What is your perspective on this topic?
