Group seeks migration of 20,000 liberty-oriented individuals to one small state.
Results of membership-wide "Which State?" vote to be announced at press conference.
Flag of winning state to be unfurled during the celebration.
The Free State Project (FSP) is a plan in which 20,000 or more liberty-oriented people will move to a single state of the U.S., where they may work within the political system to reduce the size and scope of government. The success of the FSP would likely entail reductions in burdensome taxation and regulation, reforms in state and local law, an end to federal mandates, and a restoration of constitutional federalism, demonstrating the benefits of liberty to the rest of the nation and the world.
The 5,000-plus FSP participants who have so far signed up, already one year ahead of schedule, share a desire to work toward this goal. Each has pledged to move to one small state within a five-year time frame if and when the total membership reaches 20,000. Once there, they hope to serve as humble and loyal reinforcements for the state's existing culture of liberty.

FSP participants have just completed a voting process to choose which state they will migrate to. They selected from ten candidates, all low population states and characterized by a strong culture of individual freedom.
The contenders: Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming. The results of the Condorcet vote will be announced at this press conference.

I hope that Wyoming becomes the FSP pick, but I think that history is going to force Texas into the defacto FSP over time.

If I weren't so busy these days trying to get a new business going I'd drop by for the big announcement. As much as I'd like to and as convenient as it is to do so I'll follow it on the internet instead as making money comes before fun right now - especially if I want to be able to move to the chosen state when the time comes.

Should the USA go the way of the Soviet Union in 1991- and I can foresee a couple of ways that could happen- the reconstituted Republic of Texas would not at all be the worst place you could be. But expect unruly neighbors.

I've called Cleburne, south of Ft Worth, home before. I certainly wouldn't mind doing so again. But for the immediate future, I'm giving the FSP effort my best shot.

Course, I won't be living there, I didn't sign up. But I will be living overseas anyway, and I gotta maintain voting residence in the U.S. somewhere...any Porcupine who plans to move regardless want to rent me a room so I can at least lend my vote to FSP candidates? :)

You bet. We've got some military folks who want to list the FSP goal state as their official Home of Residence as well, so you're in some pretty good company.

You might want to wait until after the result is announced next Wednesday [01 OC] though. Even a *virtual residence* in one of the colder potential FSP climes might be too chilly for you.

Hey, Alaska still is in the running- and really does have some serious points in its favour.

We share the same sentiment, though in a different order. But Montana is a VERY close third.

New Hampshire, Wyoming, and Montana are the top runners (based on sentiment on FR and other web forums), however, I hope Alaska doesn't get dismissed too soon. It's a beautiful state and there is already a strong libertarian bent to the state.

In a lot of ways, I hope Alaska develops its own localized *Free State* strategy, much like the Texans have been working on. I doubt they'll ever get a massive influx of Porcupines, but they could pick up at least some of the overflow from the first state's effort.

There's at least some good chance for such efforts in Alaska, as witness the recent handgun carry reform bill enacted and signed there. If you can get additional examples for the rest of us of how to get such things done in place, you may not have as crying a need as some of those locations in the lower 48 where things are much worse.

But oh boy, do I miss Alaska.

New Hampshire here we come!

The voting finished and the "Live Free or Die" state was chosen. So far there have been quite a articles and radio coverage. Even some TV news coverage.

The NY Times is going to do an article as well.
