West Virginia is the perfect little microcosm of Democrat socialism. Poor people are promised "free stuff" by Democrats, so.... government-addicted poor people elect Democrats in order to get "free stuff."

Guess what kind of people the Democrats want more of? (This is not rocket science.)

And the Democrats would love to do for the nation what they have done for West Virginia so they will do everything in their power to sabotage the economy and prevent an upturn. Because the more losers and parasites there are, the more Democrat voters there are. (No, this is definitely not rocket science.)

Yes, West Virginia voted for Bush. I recollect, though, that one of the main reasons was that the dimwits that run "West Wing" managed to insult West Virginians in an episode just prior to the election. I don't watch that show but the story sounds plausible. Anyone know for sure?

I know for sure. Your hypothesis is complete BS.

The main reasons WV voted for Bush is that: 1) Gore took the state for granted, while Bush visited several times, something unheard of in West Virginia, with only 5 EVs. As a result, Bush got tons and tons of gushing media coverage from local writers and TV reporters who had been pretty much ignored by all presidential candidates since JFK in 1960. 2) Gore was anti-gun in a strongly pro-2A state. 3) Captain Ecology Gore scared the hell out of people whose entire livelihood revolves around coal mining and chemical plants.

Before anyone knocks West Virginia too much, remember that if they hadn't thrown their Democratic voting habits aside in the 2000 election, Gore wins.

"Connecticut is an old Indian word for "Land of empty mill buildings."

What is missing in that definition is that it's the land of the unaffordable tax rate. I call the state of my birth the "Socialist State of Connecticut".

I can relate, as I am from just over the hill in western NC, beautiful country and sweet folk also. Problem is too many want to exploit our "slowness" into some sort of fast lane - that something called progress, just ain't what it’s cracked up to be. It’s a rich life and I miss it out here on the Southwest desert where that ‘progress’ is taking away something pretty special from the west and leaving behind the to be expected political morass and consequences.

Heart disease is high because of the diet, not the stress.

In Logan, in southwest WVA it's hard to find a young man between the ages of 18 and 30. They all left the state for school or the army. Plenty of young women on the stoop with a baby drawing food stamps.

In NYC we toured the Fricke museum. Fricke owned coal mines. He gave the money to NY charities and bought ecpensive paintings for his home, now a museum. Great man in NY, raped WVA. The stories of the coal mines and the wealth going out of state, while the companies owned the capitol city, is the real story of WVA.

Democratic Party policies led to an exodus of biblical proportion.

Same thing happening in California as we speak. CA will just be the hippie version of WV.

We are a friendly folk. We are West Virginians. Mountaineers are always free. Free to take the time to enjoy life, and hold each moment in our hearts, forever.

You're welcome hon! Call on me when you need me.

Isn't Connecticut still the wealthiest state in the country?

Considering how many limousine liberals live here, yes. (You should see the early morning traffic into NYC with morning TV stars getting the first application of makeup in the backs of limos.)

A wealthy state based on income from those who have escaped living in NYC but still work there Not as in the past when textiles, brass, firearms, etc. provided income and employment for the entire state.

"They all left the state for school or the army."

And here is Byrd railing against our troops in Iraq when a goodly proportion of them are from the state that idiot represents! What's wrong with this picture?

WV is truly a state of opposites. Haves and have-nots, run down, no-plumbing shacks and the mansions of the trial lawyers on top of the hills in Charleston, Republicans that work for change (Shelley Moore) and demogogues (Byrd, Manchin, Mollohan, Rahall)whose views are outdated and do nothing for the state, the ugliness of ghost town downtowns (Wheeling, Huntington) and beauty of Monroe County.

I left. I have no regrets because there was no opportunity there. I love the state and return often. But I cry for it, too.

Family took us to Cal in 1959. Been back a dozen times. Part of my heart will always be there in Logan County.
