"Possible, or perhaps no pregnancy, 'cause there are modern (today) humans who will bang anything."
Could it be that Cro-Magnon who thought mating with a Neanderthal a bad thing were considered "Interspeciaphobes"?

Probably, or at least guilty of hateful thinking. They were part of a Vast Cro Magnon Conspiracy.

But what if someone paints the yellow baseball bat red? And the count is 3 and 1, 1 on and 1 out? The fact that the pitcher balks does not mean that the hit and run was not on, nor that pigs cannot fly out to center.

If you search google using
mitochondrial dna neanderthal
you'll turn up a bunch of studies. All coming to the same conclusion - no evidence of interbreeding between Homo Neanderthalensis and Homo Sapiens.
To: Slicksadick
Thanks for the ping. My opinion, we are Neanderthals.

Given the bone mass of Homo Neanderthalensis, I hypothesize that a Homo Sapiens woman would not be able to pass a mixed-blood child through her pelvis.
Also, we have no way of knowing how long the gestation period was for Homo Neanderthalensis - if they needed a longer gestation period there would be the problem of prematurity.
Just being physically able to mate doesn't mean that two different species can reproduce.

Precicely!

Evidently they had not yet invented beer brewing at that time. Or as they used to say in 25000 BC, there are no Neanderthal women, only sober Cro-Magnon men. :-)
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Joe Jackson.

Belated (and for some of you a duplicated) ping.
[This ping list is for the evolution -- not creationism -- side of evolution threads, and sometimes for other science topics. To be added (or dropped), let me know via freepmail.]

If they inter-bred they are not separate species. At most, separate "races".
A caveman is a man who lives in a cave. Nothing to do with the theory of evolution one way or the other.

Another mtDNA study. It's going to take nuclear DNA to nail the question.
