I would have to say that from my personal experiences, fish can experience both pain and fear. Some fish are even quite intelligent.

So I have heard also. I think fish probably do feel. This zoologist just doesn't know how they do it.

I don't think we should base our decisions on whether to eat animals on the latest zoologist study. I remember when all the textbooks insisted dogs could not see color. Lo, and behold! They can. I can think of other examples where textbooks have reversed themselves in regards to animals. Still, I admit that I eat various killed creatures.

. . . awareness of pain depends on functions of specific regions of the cerebral cortex that fish do not possess.

No PETA wuss I, but I wonder if this is true given the brain's ability when damaged to shift functioning from one region to another in the young; i.e., who says you need a cerebral cortex to feel pain when you're a fish?

I have absolutely nothing against fishing whatsoever- I have done it myself more than a couple of times. That said, if I am going to take a critter's life, I want to do it as quickly and painlessly as possible. I will give the things the benefit of the doubt.

Mr. Rose said he was enormously concerned with the welfare of fish,...

Really? Was he feeling guilty?

I've caught plenty of fish, it's great fun but I have no doubt that they feel pain. What they can't do is dwell on it in thought.

My Koi are the smartest fish I know. No really. they are quite aware of their surroundings and respond accordingly as various friends and threats approach their pond.

I'm not ready to give up beef or pork despite having little doubt that cows and pigs can feel pain. The fishies are still in play no matter how this comes out.

Ah, Captain Hook, Peter Pan was right when he made you say "I am a cod fish!"
