Democrats' poll flop threatens Clintons (BILL N' HILL ALERT)
The Sunday Telegraph ^ | October 27, 2002 | Charles Laurence

Posted on 10/27/2002 1:54:01 AM PDT by MadIvan

Senator Hillary Clinton was facing the destruction of her New York power base yesterday as her Democratic Party headed for humiliation in the state gubernatorial election on November 5.

In an extraordinary upset, a traditionally Democratic state appears poised not only to re-elect a Republican governor, but to force the Democrat challenger into third place behind a pro-business Independence Party candidate with no record of public service.

Goodness, is this true? If so, I intend to laugh a lot. - Ivan

Political analysts predict that such a humiliation could damage the former First Lady's credibility as a New York senator and a much-touted future potential presidential candidate.

"The Clintons were supposed to be helping revitalise the New York Democratic Party, not presiding over its destruction," one senior local party member said privately.

Both the Clintons and the party appear to have misjudged the election. The seeds of potential destruction lie in both a historic division between New York city liberals and the more conservative "upstate" voters, and the choice of candidate selected.

Bill Clinton, who stayed out of the battle during the candidate-selecting primaries, was finally prompted into a visible role last week after the New York Post printed a headline screaming: "Dems to Bubba [a southern term for a white male]: It's Time to Panic."

He appeared at a Manhattan rally with the Democratic gubernatorial candidate Carl McCall. Then, on a night when the incumbent governor George Pataki dined with the popular ex-mayor Rudolph Giuliani at a party fund-raiser, the Clintons joined a Democratic gathering at a fashionable nightclub.

The alarm was raised when opinion polls showed a surge for the Independence Party's Tom Golisano, a businessman from the state's northern industrial belt. Figures from one leading poll showed Governor Pataki on 47 per cent, Mr McCall on 31 and Mr Golisano on 18 - up from 14 on September 25.

In some suburban areas, Mr Golisano had inched to within two points of Mr McCall, a powerful black politician whose campaign has been hit by a scandal over alleged improper use of influence.

Among the independent swing-voters who can decide an election, Mr Golisano was actually a nose ahead, at 22 per cent to 21 per cent.

"If Golisano manages to come in second - and I think that's possible - that will be a significant humiliation to the Democratic Party, and it would put New York into the 'swing states' column for the presidential elections of 2004," said Hank Sheinkopf, who has been fired as Mr McCall's campaign strategist.

"The problem is that we thought Golisano would hurt Pataki, but that's not happening."

Mrs Clinton faces more than a publicity setback. Under the American voting system, she is not due to stand for re-election until 2004.

A Golisano success now would mean that when that election day comes, New York voters would find her as a Democratic candidate relegated to third place on ballot sheets, behind Republicans and the Independence Party.

The Clintons are like a tornado; they always leave destruction in their wake.

Senator Clinton would run for reelection in 2004 only if the senate seat she won had been vacated by the early departure of another Senator from New York, as Senate term of office is normally six years, and normally she would not need to run for office again until 2006.

Can anyone enlighten us? Did Senator Moynihan or someone vacate this Senate seat early?

what do "bump" "ping" mean?

Ping is for someone or a list of FReepers you want to alert to read the article. If you are pinged, then the post shows up under "your comments".

Bump is to acknowledge the article to the general FReeper population so that it is bumped to the top (bttt) of the articles listed on the right side of the page, in order of the most frequent and most numerous number of posters on that thread.

Hillary doesn't have to run again til 2006.

"Forgive my ignorance, what do "bump" "ping" mean?"

Ping typically is used to flag person to a particular thread or resposne. For example if I wanted to alert you to this thread then I could create a response in the thread in which you were the "to" party (or recipient) and then I might just use PING in the response body. When you looked at your "new messages to you" page then you would a message from me "pinging" you to this thread.

Bump is similar although more of a generic term someone mightt post when they want to keep the thread near the top of the recent message list. "BTTT" may also be used in this role. It's short for "Back To The Top". Keeping a thread near the top garners more attention.

Hope this helps and welcome to Free Republic.

That's one of Bill's many nicknames, Ivan. In normal usage it denotes "redneck." It is not a compliment. lol

I love the Telegraph, but they're making way too much of this. No taint ever touches the Clintons...no matter what they do. She managed to buy and manipulate her way into the Senate while NY had both Pataki as Govenor and Guiliani as Mayor.

By the time she runs for either President or re-election, the public will have forgotten everything. The press, the unions and Harold Ickes will make sure they do.

Wrong. She's not up for reelection until 2006,but I have no doubt she will be a presidential candidate in 2004.

Except that when Clinton was on Imus he pretended to laugh at himself when he said, "Bubba is southern for menshe", and sealed the New York primary.

The Clintons know how to do this stuff.

Ivan, I don't generally editorialize much, beyond a few comments; preferring to let my links speak for me ( they will follow ) but let me just mention this--

When the clintons first slithered into the national spotlight, there was no web, talkback radio ( a lovely Australianism... ) was in its infancy, and the execrable mainstream media ( press and entertainment divisions ) held a deathgrip on "what people talked about, thought about, cared about, and ridiculed."

I figured clinton, if he ever rose to the highest office here, would become "yet another Jimmy Carter- a failed Southern Governor who morphed into a failed Presidency..."

Little did I realize the crime, corruption, and serial frauds awaiting America and her people-- until it was too late to do much about it.

In retrospect, it was all so predictable- character is indeed destiny, rot does indeed start at the top and sink down into the body, infesting each level lower as it goes, and the decadence that the clintons and their worshippers infected America with will be with us for years to come...

I only hope that the America I know- that "flyover country" the glitterati & litterati in NYC, LA, and DC so disdain & despise- is better and stronger than the rot, and will one day prevail.

Without further ado, my latest slander of the clintons:

"Has that clinton "legacy" made you feel safer yet?"

Lest Americans ever forget why the clintons, and all their enablers need to be hectored, hounded, and harried into silence, until "clintonese is only spoken in Hell," look here:

Warning!

Liars-- and Sleaze, Incorporated... ( my files on the clintons and friends )

Bill Clinton, who stayed out of the battle during the candidate-selecting primaries,......

This is also BS. Although they promised to stay out of it the Clintons put the strong arm on Cuomo to drop out and Slick stood right behind him when he announced it so that he wouldn't forget his lines. Hillary had marched in a parade with McCall, breaking her pledge to be neutral, just before that.

The Clintons and the Cuomos are in a battle for control of the Dem power base in NY. (They are also in a tight race for sleeziest politicains) Right now the Clintons have the upper hand and control of the DNC. However, many Dems have decided that the Clintons have overplayed their hand and are beginning to chafe. Paybacks will not be kind to the Clintons.

You screwed up, you trusted the Clintons. Since when did the Clintons care what or who they destroy? Now that they own the NY Democratic Party, only extreme hard leftists will be welcome at the top, and they'd better have loads of greenbacks to share. Just being a leftist Democrat isn't good enough for a leadership role. Of course we have been telling the world this for years.

Paybacks will not be kind to the Clintons.

Not to mention that the Clintoon's puppet at the helm of the DNC reneged on the promise to give poor Carl a $500,000 contribution.

The DNC did give poor Carl $250,000, but refused to give him any more until he closed the gap with Pataki to within single digits in the polls. Just goes to show that when the Clintoon's decide you are not applying yourself to their ambitions, they will put the aqueeze on you one way or another.

Sadly, I don't think this news will ruffle the feathers of either Clinton. They are cheaters, plain and simple, and know the final results of the November vote count as I type.

Hillary's seat was "custom made" with the retirement of Moynihan. Had Guilani not withdrawn because of illness, he MIGHT have beaten her but there is such a strong Dem base in NY, no one can say..

However, in hindsight, God had a "bigger job" for Guiliani.

All phases of his character came into play on 9-11, his leadership, his compassion, his loyalty, his love for humanity. He gave us strength and hope and day after day, renewed his faith that somehow we could struggle through the attack.

No matter where Hillary goes and what she does, I do not believe that Hillary can win anything at this point in time. She "and her immoral mate" are all about "the worst of politics". They do nothing for New York or our country. Even her latest statement "it takes a community" to catch a sniper is a reference to herself. She's unbelievable and disgusting.
