Liberals are like drunks. When they wake up bleary-eyed in the morning, facing yet another day of harsh reality is just too much – back to the bottle.
Having downed a jar of the 180-proof poppycock that passes for their political philosophy, they stand up (or try), straighten their tie (which they just skew further left), brush the crumbs off their lapels, and stagger out the door – well fortified.
In their sobriety-challenged condition they are, however, a tad accident prone.
A perfect example is the reaction to Democrat Congressman John Dingell's defeat of his fuzzyheaded primary opponent Rep. Lynn Rivers. During the campaign, Rivers – who makes Trotsky look like Milton Friedman – came out hard against gun rights. Bad move.
Not that Dems saw it coming. Mindlessly shuffling down the street, they tripped right over her ill-conceived position into a pratfall of Dick Van Dyke proportions.
"Although Dingell squeaked by, this race is a warning to all of the gun lobby's congressional cronies – standing with the gun lobby jeopardizes your congressional seat. Americans want sensible gun laws," said Michael D. Barnes, Brady Campaign president.
Just shaved by, did he? Dingell's 59 percent of the vote compared to Rivers' 41 percent … Man, ole Dingell just barely eked that out.
Of course, if Barnes weren't such a dipsomaniac for Democrat dunderheadedness, he'd have been sober enough to realize that the opposite of what he said is demonstrably true – standing with the gun lobby, as Dingell did, ensures your congressional seat.
Better get to rehab, Barnes.
And take Hanny Megally of Human Rights Watch with you.
"We strongly urge you to adopt and publicize a policy of full respect for the laws of war, including an immediate and total stop to the practice of targeting civilians," she wrote to the head of Hamas earlier this week. "We ask that you publicly and unequivocally call on the military wing of your organization … to desist from any attacks or acts of reprisal that deliberately target civilians or are indiscriminate."
What does Megally expect, terrorists will read this, see the error of their ways and stop hurting people? Great idea! Why didn't we think of that years ago?
We could have curbed Hitler by sending him a nice arrangement of flowers and a note about how meanly he was behaving. That would have done it for certain. There is no need for defensive action or violence. According to this skirted Neville Chamberlain, you've just got to know how to talk to these people.
Liberals have a hard time facing the fact that some people are just bad and have no scruples about killing innocent people. Reasoning with such folks is better done with rockets than rhetoric. Someone should stop Megally from nipping that bottle and remind her that deep down inside, when terrorists' inner children are watching "Barney," they're really plotting how to blow up the talking eggplant.
Reality does, however, catch up to liberals sooner or later. That's the trouble with it. Pretty soon the liquor succumbs to the pressures of life and the hip flask just doesn't cut it anymore.
Germany is finding this out right now. After half a century of socialism, Europe's biggest economy is hurting big time with unemployment at nearly 10 percent. A country praised for its welfare system, Germany is now having to force its lay-about workforce back into jobs.
"For the first time, the question of temporary work is being accepted – even by trade unions – and this consensus represents a breakthrough that could lead to reform," says Manfred Weiss, a labor law professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt. "We could see a weakening of the welfare state, but perhaps a necessary one."
According to the Aug. 7 Christian Science Monitor, Germany's biggest bureaucracy is the unemployment department. It has some 90,000 desk jockeys in its hire to, among other ministrations, process the checks of the unhired.
It is no surprise then that a "reform commission estimates hundreds of thousands of unemployed could return to work if the department were to concentrate on job placement rather than managing unemployment checks."

The sad thing is that liberals have to be pushed into such dire corners before they see their political profligacy. Disaster must strike before they are willing to spit the sauce and return to a sober discussion of the issues.
Before their idiocy catches up with them, however, they continue to tip the elbow and ignore that life doesn't jibe with their grandiose notions of cosmic justice and peace in our time.
They refuse to see that Americans like guns – pro-gunners win; terrorists are bad – imploring them to do good doesn't work; and government can't support the shiftless forever – the tree must be pruned eventually.
The unfortunate thing for the rest of us is that their persistent delusions are almost enough to drive us to drinking.

Of course, by 1993 I had started reading "conservative" books. That spelled the end for my liberal wordlview. Allan Bloom's Closing of the American Mind was like electro-shock therapy to me; it had the effect of changing my entire view of the left, about "progress," about such things as affirmative action, the universities.
And with the birth of my son I came to understand that abortion is the most heartless, thoughtless, and inhuman bit of social engineering in American society today. There was no way for me to reconcile my feelings as a father with the supposed "need" for this abomination. It was the most visceral, human reaction to anything I've ever had in my entire life.
It's amazing how that criminal made conservatives out of moral used-to-be liberals. Which means, of course that current liberals are immoral.

In a fit of anti-incumbent rage, but not willing to cross completely to the dark side, I gave more than passing thought to voting for Perot in '92. Don't tell anybody.
