have paid for the contraband vessel "Karine A" to carry weapons to Arafat's
authority. The ship was seized on January 3rd by a special unit of the
Israeli navy on the Red Sea. The "Karine A" was on its way to its
Palestinian addressees, fully laden with 50 tons of weapons from Iran.The CIA, Israel's Mossad, and Palestinian security services have conducted
their own independent investigations. All three "investigators" have
withheld their conclusions up to this point for different reasons. According
to the estimates of the intelligence services, Saudi Arabian businessmen
paid $10 million dollars to Iran for the weapons carried on the "Karine A."
Rent for the ship cost $400,000, and fuel, repairs, and harbor fees cost $1
million.The involvement of Saudi business circles--among them members of the royal
family as well as Saudi intelligence--in the "Karine A" affair sheds a new
light on the already long-disturbed political relationship between the US
and its partner in the Gulf. It also reveals domestic fault-lines and
rivalries within the kingdom, in which more and more critical voices are
raised against the US.In addition, these events indicate for the first time the readiness of
influential figures in the royal family and the intelligence service to
support Arafat's newly sealed bond with the Lebanese Hizbollah and its
Iranian patron [Anlehnungsmacht]. Previously, the Saudis did not reckon in
Arafat's intifada "jewel box" [Intifada-Schatulle], but rather sponsored the
fundamentalist Hamas in its bases in the Palestinian autonomous zone,
Jordan, and Syria.The money transfer for the arms smuggling aboard the "Karine A" was
completed through Islamic charity organizations in Jidda. Middle Eastern
intelligence services know, however, that inside Saudi Arabia no larger sum
of money is transferred without the knowledge and approval of the
intelligence service or higher governmental authorities - especially not if
the funds are channeled through Abu Dhabi and Beirut.The financial transactions surrounding the "Karine A" also revealed further
concerns about disturbing developments in the crisis-ridden Middle Eastern

been involved not only in the arms deal with Arafat's authority. Iranian
Revolutionary Guards also organized the secret transfer of al-Qaeda agents
and fighters into Lebanon and Syria. The sea and air transport were paid for
with Saudi Arabian money.Each al-Qaeda member was given five thousand dollars in cash, were he
willing to go to the West Bank or Gaza. So far, about 80 to 100 al-Qaeda
cadres have accepted Arafat's offer. They are waiting in the Palestinian
refugee camp at Ein al Hilweh [in Lebanon] to be smuggled into the
Palestinian autonomous zone.

das Schmugglerschiff "Karine A" mit Waffen f?r Arafats Beh?rde bezahlt
haben. Das Schiff war am 3. Januar von einem Spezialkommando der
israelischen Marine im Roten Meer aufgebracht worden. Die "Karine A" war,
vollgepackt mit einer 50-Tonnen-Ladung an Waffen aus dem Iran, unterwegs zu
ihren pal?stinensischen Adressaten.Unabh?ngig voneinander hatten der US-Geheimdienst CIA, Israels Mossad und
pal?stinensische Sicherheitsbeh?rden eigene Recherchen angestellt. Bis heute
haben alle drei "Investigatoren" ihre Erkenntnisse aus unterschiedlichen
Gr?nden unter Verschluss gehalten. Nach Erkenntnissen der Geheimdienste
bezahlten saudi-arabische Gesch?ftsleute f?r die Waffenladung auf der

Verh?ltnis zwischen den USA und seinem Partner am Golf. Es zeigt aber auch
innenpolitische Verwerfungen und Rivalit?ten innerhalb des K?nigreiches, in
dem sich mehr und mehr kritische Stimmen gegen die USA erheben.Au?erdem zeigen die Vorg?nge zum ersten Mal die Bereitschaft einflussreicher
Figuren im K?nigshaus und im Geheimdienst, die neu gekn?pfte Verbindung
Arafats mit der libanesischen Hisbollah und deren iranischer Anlehnungsmacht
zu unterst?tzen. Bisher zahlten die Saudis n?mlich nicht in Arafats
Intifada-Schatulle, sondern sponserten eher die fundamentalistische Hamas in

Geldsumme ohne Wissen und Zustimmung des Geheimdienstes oder h?chster
Regierungsstellen an den Empf?nger flie?t - erst recht nicht, wenn die
Gelder ?ber Abu Dhabi und Beirut geschleust werden.Die Finanztransaktionen um die "Karine A" enth?llten weitere Besorgnis
erregende Entwicklungen in der nah?stlichen Krisenregion. Iranische Kreise
sollen nicht nur in den Waffendeal mit der Arafat-Beh?rde verstrickt sein.
Iranische Revolutionsgardisten haben auch den geheimen Transfer von
Al-Qaida-Agenten und K?mpfern in den Libanon und nach Syrien organisiert.
Bezahlt wurde der See- und Lufttransport mit saudi-arabischem Geld.Jedem Al-Qaida-Mitglied wurden 5000 Dollar bar auf die Hand geboten, wenn es
bereit sei, ins Westjordanland und nach Gaza zu kommen . Inzwischen sollen
etwa 80 bis 100 Al-Qaida-Kader Arafats Offerte akzeptiert haben. Im
pal?stinensischen Fl?chtlingslager Ein Al Hilweh warten sie darauf, in die
pal?stinensischen Autonomiegebiete geschmuggelt zu werden.
