Mistakes happen. Jim Varney wasn't just Ernest and Jed Clampett in the movie. This stands as the most bizarre yet hilarious bits to come out of his mind:

Somehow I never get tired of it. He often came to the store I was running at the edge of Vanderbilt, doing his best to look as different as possible from his characters because he despised having his life disrupted by fandom. This video shows he was on the same creative level as Jim Carey but suffered from typecasting as the dumbest character in his arsenal. Left us in 2000 passed away from lung cancer (Don't smoke!).

I believe most people use Gender to define Male and Female. They avoid the term Sex because it had other meanings.
I think you are overthinking the subject.
