Used them a few weeks back in a big gnarly CGI web app written in PERL containing huge blocks of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and SQL in a run on mess. Defined some bitmask integers to track options in both the PERL and JavaScript via dummy html tag attributes. Nice concise way to communicate many boolean options that was easy to decipher between the languages.

A knife and a drill and it’s over in 2 minutes.

It's been a while since I worked on front end stuff. But the last time I was part of a team that did that (with me focusing mainly on the back-end, but communicating with the front-end) we used either JSON or XML to pass configuration details across the platforms so that our settings were somewhat readable in the code. If it's something that's passed around in one platform in the same language, we construct a class with properties (perhaps collection classes like Dictionary or ListArray for lists of objects containing properties), again so that our code is a bit readable with setting names on the values that's being passed round.

Most of the work I do now in my quasi-retirement is in PL/SQL and almost entirely back-end stuff.

Well between client and server Jason is pretty standard. This was within a single perl CGI file that generated the html/css/js dynamically. The Javascript could see the html structure (dom) but there was no other way to communicate between the perl and the Javascript.
