I have a science fiction library of thousands of books.
Less than one tenth of one percent of them have been made into movies or other forms of entertainment.
Most have interesting ideas and plots, memorable characters—plenty to work with....
But none are woke.
Perry Mason had great plots. Modern Hollyweird has “lost the plot”.
Read later.
Re: ‘Reacher.’ Just read the books by Lee Child. Start with ‘The Killing Floor’ and you will be hooked!
The movie version(s?) with Tom Cruise are ridiculous. I haven’t seen the TV series, so correct me if I’m wrong on that point.
I can’t remember the last time I watched anything ‘new’ on TV. I’ll read or watch a cooking show or a travel show before anything else and the both of us love a good Murder Mystery. ;)
When you realize hardly anything made after 2019 is worth watching, you can find about anything made before that streaming for free somewhere. Even the deep pocketed streaming services like Disney+, HBO/MAX and others relying strictly on streaming media (no Live TV) have nothing new to offer viewers.
The virtue signaling in Hollywood flocked to woke’ism and destroyed the industry. Racism against white people is just more important to them than accomplishing something great.
In the old days the leftist propagandists were very subtle.
A good example of that is the old movie starring Rock Hudson called “Seconds”.
It was written and directed by Communists with the intent of brainwashing the masses.
The problem was that the (brilliant and artistically excellent) symbolism went way over the heads of the audience and nothing “took”.
Now the leftists go for the sledgehammer route.
I’m not nearly as worried about DEI on TV as I am with DEI on airlines and health care.
As long as you see a “White Lives Matter” sign at your doctor’s office or the airline counter you have nothing to worry about....
Lol.
BTTT
DIE with DEI!
I thought the first 10 or 12 Reacher books were good, but then they started to fade. The last one or two seem like Lee and Andrew Child are pretty much phoning it in now.
Check out Kanopy.
They have an incredible collection and the movies are free but you need a library card from a participating library.
The downside is they limit the number of movies per month.
I watched “Mayor of Kingstown” for two seasons.
Part of it are excellent—but they can’t help having scenes where a leftist teacher propagandizes their students—totally ruined several episodes.
I found myself hoping her mugger would kill her since she was obviously incapable of joining the rational human race.
;-)
At the end of season 2 they really blew it—had a five minute lecture of leftist propaganda “explaining” what the show was about...
That is brutally bad art when you have to do that.
That is what I mean by “sledgehammer” propaganda.
If they cut out the stupid scenes I mentioned the show would be solid.
I’ve heard the Perry Mason books were much more gritty than the TV show was. Never read one but I mean to.
The 2 seasons of Reacher on Amazon Prime are pretty good. Much more faithful to the books than the movies. A little woke but they don’t beat you over the head with it. Well worth checking out.
The thing is, as storied as they are, many of these old comedies (like "Mr. Peepers") are simply not that good or that funny, at least by today's standards. I hope it's not because they're clean! "I Love Lucy" is truly hilarious and I once laughed out loud watching old abridged episodes of "December Bride," but most old sitcoms are not a big deal.
Have gun will travel, the rifleman, wanted dead or alive, the twilight zone.......
There was a show in the early ‘90s called “Nowhere Man”. Both my wife and I really enjoyed it, only for it to be cancelled. I was a twister of a story, based on a journalist that got caught up in the murder of officials at the highest levels, somehow replaced by lookalikes - where the truth was always elusive. Then he learns he was brainwashed and was actually part of the whole story.
I’d love to see it picked back up.
As the article says, it’s not that ‘woke’ is new - it’s just that it was just a periphery aspect injected into, otherwise, good shows. Now the ‘woke’ is front and center the core of the programming....which is just preachy and boring.
Occasionally a good series still slips through. The current series “Masters of the Air” on Apple+ is great. It’s like Band of Brothers but centers on a group of Air Force B-52 pilots and crews during WW2.
I know your concerns. At this point, I am skeptical even of Baptist or Catholic run hospitals. I am also skeptical of doctors, dentists, and other practitioners who belong to multioffice medical providers.
