They didn't mean to "kill themselves". That was a screw up, and China desperately rushed to cover up the leak, deny the human to human spread and hide the massive outbreak in Wuhan. I doubt the virus that infected the researchers at WIV, and then the world, was ready for release. It was a work in progress. At least that's my opinion/theory.
Pinning the virus on WIV has massive geopolitical ramifications for China, so they must stop it at all costs. Pinning SARS2 on WIH also means an outbreak of "SARS3" could be viewed by some countries as a biological attack. The repercussions of that could destroy China.

China is coming upon a devastating demographic trend- too many aging citizens and not enough workers to support them. A disease that favors killing the elderly is curiously convenient for them. At this point, there’s little question that this thing came from a lab. The only question is whether it was accidentally or diliberately released.
