“Dims should be happy...she’s as good as a democrat.”

I’m not so sure Shumer would agree with you.

“She’s a wily political operator, and more conservative than all Democrat senators except for Manchin.”

On judges, she’s more conservative, FAR MORE CONSERVATIVE, than Manchin. Other areas, not quite as much.

“True. If Biden pulls off the steal, Collins will vote to confirm all of his leftist judges, including for the Sup Court. She’ll vote for gun bans and other anti-Second Amendment legislation that comes her way. She’ll vote for radical pro-LGBT legislation that comes her way.

But she won’t vote to end the filibuster, so hopefully bad legislation can be stopped before she gets to vote for its final passage.”

All true, but she also WILL NOT vote to stack the courts...which buys this country at least 2 more years.

[She won by 9 points. That wasn’t close. Pollsters are frauds. She was supposed to lose by 5. They just lie. It’s not more complex than that. Quinnipiac had her losing by 12. Only 21 points off.]

I doubt they do. They dazzle us with a blizzard of rationalizations, but what they do is similar to witchcraft. Nobody knows nothing*. The basic assumption of polling is that the profile of the people who respond is similar to the voting population. They are discovering that this is untrue to the point that their numbers are worthless either in themselves or as trend indicators.

* This was what an Oscar-winning scriptwriter said about the movie business. His favorite movies - the ones he was involved in - were commercial duds. His least favorite ones were blockbusters. But it might as well apply to the polling biz. Trying to divine the intentions of a voting population of hundreds of thousands from a random sample of a few hundred may be impossible. The intent is to get a random, representative sample. But the kinds of people who respond to polls may not be representative of the larger milieu.

I think people forget that in one man, one vote systems, pols are elected to be followers of the popular will, not leaders. Alexander could lead because he could kill anyone who disagreed. Pols in democratic systems cannot. Collins is far more conservative than her electorate. Manchin is far more liberal. In each of their ways, both are excellent water carriers for their respective parties.

I’m glad we here in the 2nd CD of Maine were able to drag her across the finish line... We need the seat.
Something else I heard on the radio about an hour ago, and not that it matters in the big scheme of things, but apparently, the results for the 2nd CD have been reversed, and President Trump did in fact split the state. All day, I’ve seen that all 4 of our meager electoral votes were handed to Biden. I can’t yet find a link to corroborate, but it tis what I heard. Hmmmmm.....

we need every senator we can get because the 2022 election will again threaten to take away the GOP majority. If Biden steals the election and we lose the senate in 2022 then 2023 will be the year of the packed supreme court and the year of DC statehood and lots of other stuff.

It doesn’t work like that. The MAJORITY LEADER decides what comes to the floor for a vote. Thus, having her in the majority lets Mitch McConnell decide whether to even put those things up for a vote.

Setback for the Lincoln Project as well. For that we can get some satisfaction out of this.

Our “placeholder” Senator prevails. No one should be under any illusion that if our majority is dependent on her that any high amount of meaningful legislation is going to go through beneficial to our side (although she did vote for tax reform - which was a big one)...but she will block court packing and things of that nature from getting through, which is no small thing.

A lot of out-of-state money too. Add to that what the Dems spent to unseat McConnell and Graham —and they got trounced. Also, what was the total money Bloomberg spent to win Florida for Biden?

Her re-election is a very good thing she will vote for McConnell as leader and Schumer is again denied.
As soon as Murkowski said yes would vote yes, Collins got permission to vote No which took all the wind out of Gideon’s sails, fooled the dopes in Maine and got her over the line.
This now keeps McConnell’s Judge Machine chugging along which will reshape the courts who twenty years.
The No was enough to avoid the ridiculous runoff system Maine Democrats devised specifically to beat Republicans and especially Collins.
Congratulations Mitch and Susan, your plan worked exactly and you thought it would.

I hear that's still in doubt, but that was awhile ago.

Not crazy about RINO Collins but we do get a 2 year reprieve if the numbers hold for a 52 Republican senate majority from the dystopia of a majority Dem Congress and Dem Pres. Cocaine Mitch stands between the deluge of court packing, adding states, killing the filibuster, dems raising taxes, wildly leftist Dem judges, etc.

"....lose the senate in 2022...

This year, 35 of 100 Senate seats were on the ballot. Of those, 12 were Dem while 23 were GOP, making us twice as vulnerable to "flips" as the Dems were. So in 2022 I'm sure the ratio will be much better for us.

Speaking of which ..... does anyone know how many GOP Senators and Dem Senators are in "the class of 2022"?

That’s true. So if the GOP holds the Senate then we won’t have to worry about the Equality Act or a ban on ARs coming up for a vote.

But I doubt McConnell would be willing to block a vote in a Biden/Harris nominee to replace Stephen Breyer. He had the stones to do it an election year when protecting the conservative icon Scalia’s seat, but I can’t see him doing it if it’s a leftist for a leftist. And I have doubts he’d be willing to do it if Alito or Thomas were to retire (which hopefully will not happen) unless they held out until 2024.

Wishful thinking. China Mitch will get a deals done for GOP donors like Big Pharma. Maybe another Iran deal for Democrats and amnesty. Meanwhile, the country will drift ever leftward due to immigration and blue state to red state migration.

No, what we needed was Collins to not aid and abet the coup for the past four years. Trump’s victory was stolen by the Uniparty and our 2016 vote has been invalidated. We have been disenfranchised and you can thank Republicans like Collins for that.

I was certain that Collins was going to lose

Me, too.

The Turtle was brilliant to release her to vote against ACB. That gave her the win, saved the Senate, AND ACB is still on the Supreme Court.
