My guess is this will happen regardless, as the socialists will not be satisfied with half a loaf (even though it was baked by someone else). They want control of the D party and a large fraction of Ds will not just hand it over easily.
I have read several stories this year featuring blue-collar union local bosses complaining about the Democratic Party not paying attention to them. I felt sorry for these people because they lacked the awareness to realize that this is a feature rather than a bug. The new "Trump-ized" GOP is now the party of the working stiff along with farmers and other small business men/ women.

Social justice ratings will not look kindly on someone running as a GOP. Their children won't get into college or get a good job, their banker will refuse a mortgage or even a car loan, and they may say goodbye to their own job. A big price to pay for idntification as a conservative.
