QUESTIONER: “Oh, my question is in regard to the latter half of the Tribulation period, when...when men will be required to have the mark of the beast in order to buy or sell. My question is once the person takes the mark, is there any possibility of Him coming to Christ?”

JOHN: “Yes, I think, you know, in the seven-year Tribulation coming in the future, we’re gonna get into this, so probably a week from Sunday night, maybe this Sunday night, maybe a week, I’m not sure. But the Tribulation is a seven-year period, right? The Rapture of the church, seven-year Tribulation, then Christ returns, sets up His Kingdom. Now, in that seven-year period, really two things happen. God begins to judge the world in...with a series of holocausts; and, at the same time, He begins to redeem His people Israel; and in the process of this, the Antichrist establishes his rule; and in order to function in the economy of the antichrist, you have to take the mark of the beast. The mark being the number of a man, Revelation 13, 666. Six is the number of man, right? Seven is the number of perfection, and man always falls short of perfection, 666, always sixes, never seven. So the number of a man, and apparently what’s gonna happen, you take the mark on your hand or on your forehead; and we’ve talked a lot about that, you know, that...that that’s kind of the computer situation. We’re now moving fast toward the time when we’re going to have to do everything we do by cards and by numbers and all of that, and those number...the thing about a card that’s a problem is you lose it, and they’ve already devised systems to put the number on your hand and on your forehead, and you go through a scanner and, you know, that’s how you buy and sell. It’s automatically deducted from your bank account.

“Now, the question is, if you’re living in the Tribulation period, and you take this mark, in other words, you identify with the beast’s empire, will you still be able to be redeemed? And I think the answer to that is yes. Yes! Otherwise there would be no salvation of anybody in the end of the Tribulation; and you’ve got to have the salvation of folks in the end of the Tribulation. You’re gonna have the Jews redeemed. You’re gonna have, according to Revelation chapter 7, ‘An innumerable number of Gentiles redeemed, so many they can’t even be counted across the face of the earth.’ So I don’t think the fact that someone takes that is a sentence to, to permanency anymore than you being a part of this world system once in your life means you have to be a part of the system all your life. Well, especially when 144,000 don’t start their ministry till the second half. That’d make it a little tough.”

Ironically, John MacArthur presented this false teaching during a Question & Answer forum at his church titled "Unleashing God's Truth One Verse at a Time".

That those who receive the mark of the Beast will be able to be redeemed is a deadly deception that will cause multitudes to be eternally damned; for God has explicitly warned that anyone who receives the mark of the beast will be eternally tormented with fire:

“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” (Rev. 14:9-11)

“And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.” (Rev. 20:4)

The Word of God could not be plainer concerning the eternal state of those who receive the mark of the Beast: “If any man” (no exceptions) “worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand...he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone...for ever and ever...whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.”

How does John MacArthur, an expositor of Scripture who publishes Study Bibles with copious notes explaining verses and passages therein, overlook one of the strongest and most critical warnings in Scripture? The Word of God also warns that “there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies...” (2 Pet. 2:1)

John MacArthur introduced this “damnable heresy” in 1980, and he has issued no retraction since then; yea, MacArthur’s propaganda ministers defend him and his false teaching, and discredit those who expose it as deception.

John MacArthur’s statement regarding the mark of the Beast is deceptive on more than one level. First, he does not accurately identify the mark of the Beast, but implies that it will be a computer generated bar code. However, a bar code or microchip implant does not fulfill the Scriptural requirements for the mark of the Beast. MacArthur was right that God would not sentence a person to eternity in hell for merely trying to survive in the world system, which may soon require taking a bar code or chip implant. Receiving the real mark of the Beast will involve a far more serious sin.

The mark of the Beast will be an occult symbol branded or tattooed on the forehead or right hand of those who take an oath of allegiance to Lucifer during an initiation ritual, similar to initiations performed in secret societies like Freemasonry. The occult symbol that fits the Scriptural description of the mark of the Beast will be the star which represented a pagan idol worshipped by the ancient Israelites. The worship of this pagan god involved the most abominable rites, of sexual perversion and human sacrifice, for which God severely judged the Jewish nation.

“But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.” Amos 5:26

“Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.” Acts 7:43

Likewise, according to Revelation, receiving the mark of the Beast during the Tribulation period will involve worshipping the Beast—a false Christ—and his image or idol, whose number is 666:

“He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” (Rev. 13:16-17)

Tattoos are an ancient tradition of pagan initiation rites. The tattoo bonds the initiate with the entity symbolized by the tattoo and enables him to communicate with that demonic power. The meaning and function of tattoos in initiation rites are explained in Jean Chevalier’s Dictionary of Symbols, which defines the tattoo as “the permanent mark of that initiation.”

“In some pictures of a tattooed man we are faced by a permanent prayer to and identification with the heavenly powers, at the same time as a basic means of communication with them. Such is the most generalized meaning of tattooing bestowed in consequence of a rite of initiation which allows this communication to take place. At the same time, this initiation is a rite of admission into a social group and the tattoo is the permanent mark of that initiation, the badge of the tribe.

“All in all, tattooing belongs among symbols of identification and is interfused with all their magic and mystic potency. Identification always carries a double meaning: it tends to invest the individual concerned with the properties and strength of the creature or thing to which that person is assimilated and, at the same time, to immunize the latter against its potential power to cause harm. This is why tattoos depict dangerous creatures such as serpents or scorpions, or animals which are symbols of fertility, such as bulls or of power, such as lions, and so on. Identification also carries a sense of surrender or even of consecration to whatever the tattoo symbolically depicts. It then becomes a badge of fealty.” (pp. 975-976)

Like a wedding band which symbolizes the indissoluble union of a man and woman, the initiate’s tattoo “becomes a badge of fealty” to the “creature or thing to which that person is assimilated.” Since Lucifer aspires to be “like God,” in his pride he will enter into a union with his devotees in a Sacred Marriage Ritual—a Satanic counterfeit of the Marriage of the Lamb, the Lord Jesus Christ, to His Bride, the Church (Revelation 19:4).

John MacArthur has assured his people that they may take the false mark of the Beast during the Tribulation period, but he is also setting them up to receive the real mark of the Beast. During the first half of the Tribulation there will be a counterfeit Church and many counterfeits of end-time prophetic characters and events: a counterfeit Antichrist, a counterfeit False Prophet, and a counterfeit Mark of the Beast, to name a few. Christians have been misled to believe that the mark of the Beast will be the microchip implant. When this counterfeit mark arrives on the world scene, multitudes will choose to starve to death rather than receive it; which will save the perpetrators of the global conspiracy the trouble and expense of exterminating them by other means.

Many church members, however, will take the chip implant with the idea of repenting later, since popular ministers like John MacArthur have assured them it is possible to still be saved. These church members will then be told that genuine repentance requires receiving the “Seal of Solomon” or “Star of David” on their right hand or forehead. By means of this deception, the real mark of the Beast will be willingly received during initiation ceremonies performed in churches as well as synagogues, temples, mosques, shrines, groves and other sacred sites and places of worship.

Theosophist Alice Bailey disclosed in her 1957 book, Externalisation of the Hierarchy, that the Church and the Masonic Fraternity will be centers for initiations into the Mystery religion of the false Christ.

“In the esoteric group...found in all exoteric occult groups, in the church, by whatever name it may be called, and in Masonry you have the three paths leading to initiation. As yet they are not used, and one of the things that will eventuate—when the new universal religion has sway and the nature of esotericism is understood—will be the utilisation of the banded esoteric organisms, the Masonic organism and the Church organism as initiating centres...

“The Mysteries will be restored to outer expression through the medium of the Church and the Masonic Fraternity... When the Great One comes with His disciples and initiates we shall have...the restoration of the Mysteries and their exoteric presentation, as a consequence of the first initiation... the Christ...is the Hierophant of the first and second initiations and He will, if the preparatory work is faithfully and well done, administer the first initiation in the inner sanctuaries of those two bodies.” (Externalisation of the Hierarchy) 1.

A more recent book by Lee Penn, False Dawn: The United Religions Organization, Globalism and the Quest for a One World Religion (2005), reveals that Wiccans and Druids already participate in a “Mark of the Beast” ritual:

“The public face of Wicca seems benign. The reality is otherwise. Each February in San Francisco, the neo-pagan Ancient Ways bookstore hosts a 3-day ‘PantheaCon’ convention for witches which is increasingly well attended (more than 1,200 in 2000, double the 1999 attendance). The convention offers workshops that include a full range of ways to explore sacred sex, holy drug use, occultism, and black magic...

“The 2004 PantheaCon offered more of the same—or worse: ‘Chaos Magic Within the Hypnosis Paradigm,’ the ‘Ritual of the Mark of the Beast’ (a group performance of Aleister Crowley’s ritual...designed to invoke the energies of the Aeon of Horus’), ‘Kali Maa: Tradition, Devotion, and Puja,’ a Gnostic Mass presented by the Ordo Templi Orientalis, ‘Understanding Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot,’ ‘Teonanacatl—The Visionary Mushroom Transforming Global Culture,’ ‘Nuit—The Limitless Goddess,’ and a participatory ‘Druid Underworld Ritual.’” (False Dawn, pp. 143-144)

“THE STRONG DELUSION”

Phil Johnson of Grace To You defends John MacArthur’s false teaching by portraying those who received the mark as merely naive victims of deception:

“Revelation 19:20 indicates that multitudes will take the mark of the Beast because they are deceived. Scripture does not say that they are thereby automatically hardened forever against repentance. That is not the point of the strong warnings.” (Unforgivable?)

On the contrary, Scripture does say that those who worship the Beast and receive his mark will be hardened forever against repentance. For there is a progression toward committing these abominations which is chronicled in the book of Revelation. Consider the fact that following the devastating 7 Seal judgments and 6 Trumpet judgments there is a remarkable lack of repentance on earth:

“And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.” Rev. 9:20

Even the severe judgments of the Tribulation, which God sends to bring men to repentance, will not persuade hardened sinners to repent of their idolatry, sorceries, fornication, murders and thefts. Therefore, because they “believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness,” God Himself will send them a “strong delusion”:

“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” 2 Thess. 2:8-12

This idolatrous multitude will have had ample opportunity to repent, but will defiantly refuse and instead blame God for their suffering. Revelation 16 states that those who receive the Mark of the Beast have hardened their hearts to the point of blaspheming God:

Revelation 16
1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image…
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

The Tribulation period will not be the first time in history that God has extended mercy to transgressors who defiantly refused to repent. Other familiar passages in Scripture record God graciously striving with men who hardened their hearts and were given over to a reprobate, delusional mind incapable of repentance:

“And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh:… And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.” Genesis 6:3-7

“And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go...
“And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants.
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him:.. But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go... But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let them go.” Exodus 8:32; 9:34; 10:1, 20, 27

“…Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.” Isaiah 66:3-4

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity...” Romans 1:28-29

John MacArthur has assured those who take the counterfeit mark of the Beast that they may still be redeemed.

However, those who receive the real mark of the Beast will do so because God himself has sent them a strong delusion, so they will believe a lie and be damned.

“Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. I also will choose their delusions.” Isaiah 66:3-4

The strong delusion of the Tribulation period will be the same lie the serpent told Adam and Eve, that eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil would not cause them to die but make them omniscient like God:

“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Genesis 3:4-5

There are strong parallels between Satan’s lie, that eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil makes man divine, and John MacArthur’s lie, that those who receive mark of the Beast may be redeemed. The following insightful commentary from F. B. Hole’s Creation and the Fall of Man explains Satan’s strategy and also relates the serpent’s lie to the strong delusion:

“We must carefully notice the way that the serpent went to work. It will not only instruct but also forewarn us, for his wiles are always similar. He aimed to undermine the creature’s confidence in the Creator, labouring first and foremost to produce distrust of God.

“He took three steps to accomplish this.

“The first was the questioning of Divine Revelation. ‘Yea, hath God said?’ were his words. He knew that if once the word of God were weakened in the woman’s mind a breach would be made in the walls of defence.

Notice that he misquoted the words in order to question it, ‘Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?’ The woman corrected his misquotation but herself exaggerated the Divine prohibition, adding the words, ‘neither shall ye touch it,’ to what God had said. This proved that the poison of doubt had begun to work in her mind.

“Following up this initial advantage the serpent said, ‘Ye shall not surely die,’ thus denying the threatened penalty of ruin and death and giving the lie direct to God. He represented God’s judgment as being but an idle threat.

“Thus far the serpent had dealt in negatives, but now he comes to a positive assertion and dangles before the woman’s mind a tempting bait. ‘Ye shall be as gods,’ were the words by which he asserted deity for man as the result of disobedience, and he insinuated that God knew that this would be the result of their eating of the forbidden tree, and that the real reason why the prohibition was given was that He desired to withhold from them this coveted prize from motives of jealousy.

“Even the devil, however, does not trade in nothing but lies. He added the words, ‘knowing good and evil’ (ver. 5), which was true as far as it went. He did not add that they would only know both in finding themselves under the power of the evil and without desire for the good. Facts partially stated often do efficient service in an evil cause.

“These same three things are much in evidence in the false religious systems of to-day. However varied they may appear if subjected to only a surface inspection, a deeper analysis reveals that underneath they all agree in

“(1) Questioning revelation, i.e. the Word of God

“(2) Denying ruin and death

“(3) Asserting deity for man.

“Putting the three together we have ‘the lie’ to which probably reference is made in 2 Thessalonians 2:11.”

Like the serpent, John MacArthur has questioned the Word of God regarding the third angel’s warning against receiving the mark of the Beast:

“...if you’re living in the Tribulation period, and you take this mark, in other words, you identify with the beast’s empire, will you still be able to be redeemed? And I think the answer to that is yes. Yes!” (John MacArthur)

“Yea hath God said? ... If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand...he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone...for ever and ever.” (Gen. 3:1; Rev. 14:9-11)

Like the serpent, MacArthur denies that eternal ruin will be fate of those who receive the mark of the Beast:

“So I don’t think the fact that someone takes that is a sentence to, to permanency...” (John MacArthur)

“Yea hath God said? ... he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone...for ever and ever.” (Gen. 3:1; Rev. 14:11)

Like the serpent, John MacArthur has set a snare for multitudes to believe the strong delusion, that they will be redeemed if they worship the Beast and receive his mark. These deluded souls will be assured of salvation and godhood if they receive the mark; they will not become gods, however, but slaves of the Antichrist and of Lucifer. (Rev. 18:13, “slaves, and souls of men”)

John MacArthur has, in fact, written a book which teaches that the Christian’s relationship to God is one of abject slavery.

This strange book is largely based on the heretical and blasphemous teachings of anti-Christian scholars whose own books portray God as an evil slave driver who abuses his Christian slaves.
