When I was in middle school it was the days of JR and Dallas and on a DC trip people in my class were pulling similar crap on owning horses, oil wells and driving Caddys on kids from elsewhere.

My sister was in college in Kansas when the tv show Dallas was on. She convinced some of her friends that the big house in the opening scene was her parents house and ranch.
