Theres a good chance the coronavirus will never go away.
Even after a vaccine is discovered and deployed, the coronavirus will likely remain for decades to come, circulating among the worlds population.
Experts call such diseases endemic stubbornly resisting efforts to stamp them out. Think measles, HIV, chickenpox.

Plenty of evidence it can use animals as a ‘pool’ to survive in.
But....
That also means there’s a good chance efforts to defeat it will make for success defeating many coronaviruses!
We may come out with a net advance in human lifetimes.

The United States has been polio-free since 1979. COVID-19 will have that same fate.
I think that the 50th anniversary of the Watergate story might be their last Hoorah. They have been coasting on that since 1973. It would be like having the reporter who broke the Teapot Dome scandal being a constant guest on television news during the Watergate trials.
Just to be fair - think of all other bugs that would get out of labs if they didn’t use those suits and decon procedures.
And the key to drying up the pool is preventing contact with horseshoe bats in China.
The persistence of the Chinese in trapping and selling those animals is what keeps bringing this virus into human populations.
Eliminate that and stays there.
