We’ve been talking about anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine for about three weeks now. However, U.S. health agencies like FDA and CDA, are still very cautious about the effectiveness and safety of the two drugs due to small trial size and lack of sufficient data.

In France, the government caved to pressure from renowned Dr. Didier Raoult, who led the new additional study on 80 patients, results show a combination of Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin to be effective in treating COVID-19. Dr Didier Raoult, a professor of infectious diseases who works at La Timone hospital in Marseille, then declared in a video on YouTube that chloroquine was a cure for Covid-19 and should be used immediately.

I’m currently on Plaquenil - (Hydroxychloroquine) 200 mg x 2/day, for CREST syndrome (Rheumatoid/Scleroderma). It has worked very well for me and I hope it is the medicine we need to combat this virus.

“This is a planned failure designed to further sabotage the inexpensive generic drug’s reputation in favor of a more expensive alternative being developed by their ‘national champion’ Sanofi.”

I have a more nefarious idea. This is sabotage to make the virus more deadly.

Not so curious perhaps.

Two NYC specialist doctors I am checking up on twitter came down with a bad case of coronavirus at Maimonides Hospital. Both were started on hydroxychloroquin/azithryomycin, and unfortunately it didn’t work for them. Dr Jignish Patel was given Tocilizumab in iv form. Maybe his boss, Dr Jesse Greenberg was also given the same. Dr Patel improved a lot and has been discharged but Dr Greenberg deteriorated and was put on a vent. Co-workers were appealing for Gilead’s trial med Remdisivir for Dr Jesse but it’s in short supply. I don’t know what happened. I’m hoping they got the remdisivir for him. Maybe this is what happened to Dr Arnold Weg as well. Docs keep trying until they find a medicine that works.

The reason for Dr Weg seems to be that the trial was limited to 400 people

But what does a trial matter if a Dr is allowed to prescribe off label, compassionate use, etc......unless the real issue is supply and therefore it is being limited to trials.

But I get your point about Z-pak. they might have tried it and it isnt doing squat for him.

Seems like I am seeing the combo has to be started early to give it the best chance

Yes, I seeing more tweets from doctors and patients in US that the combo HCQ/Zpack does work in many cases. Maybe it’s timing or underlying health issues where it’s not working. It’s not 100% but many countries are formally making their first line of defence. If Italy is just now allowing it to be used, they’re very late.

The FDA approved used of Hydroxychloroquine for C-19 nine days ago.

This would fit in with the theory that it stops or hinders the RNA from duplicating give your body a chance to fight it off. So your best chance is early on before the virus is spinning all over your body.

Given that Zinc is thought to help hinder the RNA replication... I continue watching for things that make good Zinc transporters so that I never need to take the combo.

the problem with chloroquin etc. is you have to use it early: if you are already intubated it's probably too late, because you are in the midst of a "cytokine storm".link

A Lancet article from 2003 suggests how chloroquin etc works in viral infections.

link

that might be offline since they are doing maintanance on the site

so here is a quote

Chloroquine exerts direct antiviral effects, inhibiting pH-dependent steps of the replication of several viruses including members of the flaviviruses, retroviruses, and coronaviruses. Its best-studied effects are those against HIV replication, which are being tested in clinical trials. Moreover, chloroquine has immunomodulatory effects, suppressing the production/release of tumour necrosis factor α and interleukin 6, which mediate the inflammatory complications of several viral diseases.

Hope they’re using the combo with zinc to make it more effective. I’ve heard the addition of high vitamin C is being done, because some asian doctors found that helped as well.

Good point on the timing there. Preventing the cytokine storm is key.

I heard that it was the cytokine storm that killed young and healthy patients during the H1N1 swine flu epidemic rather than the virus itself. Wiki’s writeup on the 1918-20 Spanish flu said that’s the cause of people playing bridge in the afternoon who died in the evening.

some people are looking at monolaurin in this regard. I bought some Lauricidin. If nothing else, I will see if it makes a difference with a psoriasis patch I have.

yes: this was supposed to be the cause of the high mortality, along with secondary bacterial pneumonia.

The Teaching company has 3 lectures on the Spanish Flu on line at Youtube

https://youtu.be/kQreNV39hkw

also they have put their entire infectious disease lectures there.

It will be an international embarrasment if Italy and Spain solve their corona crises before the US does.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, Feb 28, 2020
Vitamin C and COVID-19 Coronavirus
by Damien Downing, MBBS, MRSB and Gert Schuitemaker, PhD

(OMNS February 28, 2020) There is only one existing treatment for the new coronavirus: vitamin C.

Vitamin C supports your immune system.
Vitamin C helps to kill the virus and reduces the symptoms of infection.
It’s not a COVID “cure,” but nothing is.
It might just save your life, though, and will definitely reduce the severity of the infection.

If someone tells you it’s not proven, consider two things:

Nothing is proven to work against COVID-19, because it is a new virus.
Vitamin C has worked against every single virus including influenzas, pneumonia, and even poliomyelitis.

What to do

If you do nothing else, start taking vitamin C right away; at least 3 grams a day, spread right across the day. That’s a 1,000 milligram capsule every 8 hours, or a level teaspoon of powder dissolved in a pint or so of water, drank all through the day.

If you’re smart and motivated, do all the other things recommended in our previous release Vitamin C Protects Against Coronavirus (http://orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v16n04.shtml)

When and if you catch a bug that might be COVID-19, simply increase your vitamin C intake: a rounded teaspoon (that’s 4 to 5 grams) in water (which helps to keep you hydrated) every 3 or 4 hours. And keep on taking it.

Do you consult a doctor? Do you self-isolate? Yes and yes. Of course you do; that’s your duty to others.

Vitamin C and the other measures are what you do for yourself.
