Alan Dershowitz labeled Trump 'destabilizing and unpredictable' in 2016 book

As part of President Donald Trump's impeachment defense team, Alan Dershowitz is expected to argue on behalf of the president at the Senate trial early next week. But in a 2016 book he authored, the famed defense attorney called Trump a “destabilizing and unpredictable candidate,” warning that the then-presidential candidate “openly embraces fringe conspiracy theories peddled by extremists.”

Dershowitz wrote those statements in his book titled “Electile Dysfunction: A Guide for Unaroused Voters.”

In a phone call with NBC about his comments in the 2016 book, Dershowitz clarified his views about the president. “I was campaigning for Hillary Clinton at the time. I hadn’t really ever met President Trump and it was just typical campaign rhetoric," he said. "I would not repeat that characterization today having met him.”

The onetime celebrity defense attorney and retired Harvard professor who often appears on cable news is the latest Trump defender to have at one time disparaged the president in harsh terms. Other examples include Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who during the 2016 race called Trump a “jackass” and a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot.”

The status quo had to go.

Did it go or is it in hiding?

Nailed it!

Patriots could use a lot more destabilization and unpredictability in D.C., our state capitals, and even our city halls.

In 2016, my wife didn't vote for Trump, because he was such a loudmouth and didn't think someone like that should be President. For the record, she didn't vote for Hillary either, while I enthusiastically voted for him.

After four years of watching Trump, she'll crawl over broken glass to vote for him.

“he was such a loudmouth and didn’t think someone like that should be President.”

Try as hard as I can, I will never understand that way of thinking. If he can do the job, who cares if he’s a loudmouth? If the best brain surgeon in the world is a loudmouth, would someone choose another, worse, doctor?

I too was against Trump in the beginning and voted for Cruz in the primary. I was unsure of his commitment as he had been a Democrat and funded Democrats in the past.

I see him now as one of this country’s greatest and most consequential presidents ever.

At least Trump was the one who had the courage to expose it to the light of day, even as Schumer warned that the Deep State had “ more ways that you can imagine” to retaliate against him. We have seen these ways since the day he took office and even before.

“How many of us had our doubts about Trump before we got to know him?”

Not I. I had read “The Art Of The Deal” in the early ‘90s, and when he came down the escalator I knew, without any doubt, he would be perfect. How could he NOT be perfect, considering his accomplishments, and his no-BS attitude? I was totally at peace with this from Day One.

Dershowitz has made it abundantly clear that he votes Rat. His defense of the President is based solely on his belief that he's committed no crime.

Once the President has been exonerated in the Senate I expect him to return to MSLSD declaring that he must be voted out of office in November.

Exactly. Dershowitz was late to warm up even slightly to Trump after initially opposing him (and I’ll bet that he still won’t vote Trump in 2020). Victor Davis Hanson was initially anti-Trump and is now a big fan who will almost certainly vote Trump. Half of us on this board were initially skeptical of Trump, including me. I thought he might still be a closet democrat, pretending to be a republican, and I have never been so happy to be so wrong.

I certainly did. He wasn't my first choice...or second choice...during the primaries. But today I recognize him as being an outstanding President...on par with President Reagan or any other President of my (long) lifetime.

However,I don't think he'd make a very good Pope. But then that's not the office he was seeking in '16...and is seeking again.

That he is. He throws the norm into the trash, and you never know what he will do. Buit that is exactly what this country needed, because he did it the right way, not the wrong way. 8>)

"...destabilizing and unpredictable..."

At least the article printed his statement about it being "campaign rhetoric" and that he had never met Trump - and that he would not now repeat such a statement.

But "harsh"?

Hmmm... Obummer was unpredictable - he changed his views on marriage and illegals while in office. And he certainly destabilized the government!

Trump can be unpredictable, which is good on our enemies, and destabilizing; again, on our enemies, which is also good.

So Trump is doubleplus-good? =:-)

He’s not a fan of trump. He’s just not willing to throw out the constitution in order to remove him from office.

I also had no doubts about candidate Trump. I have been a construction guy all my life and I understand him completely.

He has a job to do and he gets it done no matter who or what gets in his way. That attitude it the same if he is building a hotel or running the country.

He is not a politician. He is a producer.

And? Dershowitz wasn’t wrong and those are some of the attributes that make PDJT the right guy for the job.
