50,000 food stamp recipients in Cook County may have to find jobs starting Jan. 1
The Chicago Tribune ^ | November 20, 2019 | Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz

About 50,000 Cook County residents who receive food stamps are going to have to find jobs next year — or risk losing their benefits.

Starting Jan. 1, food stamp recipients in Cook County who are able-bodied, under the age of 50 and not living with children or other dependents will be restricted to three months of food assistance in a three-year period unless they work at least 80 hours a month. They can also meet the requirement by participating in a work-related activity, such as job training or volunteering.

The vast majority of Illinois’ 1.8 million SNAP recipients — most of whom are either elderly, children or people with disabilities — are unaffected by the change. But it will be a huge shift in Cook County, where 50,000 of the county’s 826,000 food stamp recipients will be subject to work requirements for the first time since the federal rules went into effect in the mid-1990s.

State officials and social service groups worry people who struggle to find or keep jobs will be driven out of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP or food stamps, leaving them hungry and putting pressure on food pantries. They say there isn’t enough federal funding to help connect them with jobs.

“Quite frankly, a lot of the folks who are not able to meet those requirements will not participate in the program and just drop out,” said Grace Hou, secretary of the Illinois Department of Human Services. Single adults receive, on average, $200 a month in food aid.

Awww, whatta shame.

They might be forced to “connect” all by their helpless lil selfs-— to gazillions of want ads listed on the internet, & easily accessible by their cell phones.

I just watched another damn good video of/with this song. Go to YouTube and type in this: Donald Fagen, New Frontier, (Lyrics). It captures the 1950’s well. I think you will enjoy it.

“Do they or do they not have tattoos?”

I didn’t see any tattoos but they had lots of children.

Some big surprises on this list, Oregon has
Eugene, Medford and Grants Pass. I can’t help but think this is a result of extremely lax administration of the program. In the state of Washington Yakima is no surprise, but Longview? A very generous state DSHS office would be my diagnosis.

Nice video - great photos and certainly an emphasis on Tuesday Weld.

Glad to see the musician credits listed incl the GREAT Larry Carlton on guitar - tastefully smooth on this song.

LC also played lead/arranged almost half the songs on Steeley Dan’s “The Royal Scam”, sometimes known as their guitar album. LC played the smoking leads on “Kid Charlemagne” and my favorite, “Don’t Take Me Alive”

Fun fact: The assistant engineer was Elliot Scheiner who also assisted on the album, “Gaucho”. During that time, he dated a young 19 y/o SoCal girl who he had absolutely nothing in common...and that became the song, “Hey Nineteen”

There aren't a lot of Walmarts in Cook County, Illinois. At least not in the parts where the food stamp industry is thriving.

Of course, the government could teach these people Spanish and then hire them to be Census door-to-door workers. Should lead to some even more entertaining local news broadcasts.

Boohoo able-bodied people with no dependents will have to get part time jobs, boohoo, boohoo.

After my alarm goes off at 4 am every morning and I put in a 9 hour day, I might find more time to boohoo.

The way it works is...They start squirting out pups at 14-15 and every year or so until they are 45.

They collect about $3,500 a month in welfare in food stamps.

The ‘Baby Daddies’ of this massive litter comes along for the free ride, and sells drugs and excess food on the black market. All the while keeping the brood mare well supplied with ‘baby batter’.

They are livin’ large with a drug dealer’s income and all expenses covered by the poor working stiffs that work overtime to pay the taxes.
