The historic squares of Venice were left deep underwater on Wednesday after most of the tourist mecca was inundated by the second-highest levels of flooding ever recorded, sending water into the historic basilica as more bad weather is in the forecast.

...more than 85% of the city was flooded, with water overtaking the famed St. Mark's Basilica, raising new concerns over damage to the mosaics and other artworks.

Brugnaro, who described the situation as dramatic, said he would declare a disaster zone and ask the government to call a state of emergency.

Venice very commonly floods. This just happens to be fairly severe. They are used to it though.

FTA: The high tide peaked at 74 inches late Tuesday, just short of the 76 inches set during record flooding of 1966

So when did this global warming start again?
I thought an ice age was happening in the 1970’s. Maybe the glacier melted in Venice.....

The Moses project would have stopped this if it wasn’t over budget, behind schedule and full of corruption

Officials did try to blame GW, but admitted it is a seasonal event...this one worse than the one 50 years ago——on ABC evening news.

Seems to me Holland has done well at reclaiming land from below sea level. Why not Italy in this area?

It sounds like we are actually headed for a mini-Ice age by 2035—maybe signs beginning more overtly in 2020. So I’m skeptical that ‘rising seas’ are going to destroy as many coastal areas—at least very soon—as claimed.

The science documenting the looming mini-ice age is incredibly solid from many dozens of measures—some going back many thousands of years.

I love the concrete dome home there that survived a number of hurricanes fairly unscathed.

Seems to me they have limited choices.

Leave things as they are.

Create extensive dikes like Holland.

Move the whole city to higher ground.

Seems to me like the dikes make the most economic sense but moving could have merit, too.

Otherwise—’enjoy’ the flooding & quit whining. It’s exceedingly predictable.

Built on lagoon sand? Sheesh. That’s fairly clueless. Even the Bible is clear about building one’s house on sand. Why such willful idiocy?

Can you elaborate on the “Moses project?”

Or offer a link, please?

Wow that is some flooding. It is a city I love. I wonder how long a flood like this will last?

So many foolish comments here. Willful ignorance? The city was founded around the 5th century. Lots of landlocked ancient cities are deep underground today. Venice floods in November. It’s a beautiful city and even if it’s decaying or sinking it’s not going anywhere for hundreds more years. It usually floods in select areas for an hour or so.

The mayors dramatize to get aid. This summer, I read statements that Italy’s Cinque Terre towns had been literally destroyed by storms and mudslides. A few months later I met travelers who went there and everything was beautiful.

Glad I got to see Venice and the Basillica before the great flood.

Prayers for everyone’s safety.

What I remember most was the smell. Bad sewer nostril experience.

I was there in the late 90’s for Mardi Gras. All of San Marcos Square was under water but not as bad as these photos.

Didn’t Obama just purchase a multi million dollar beach front residence?

Different sea level there, obviously.

Yes, I think you're right. Been to Venice several times... I love it. It's sad to see this damage though.
