Two people in China were diagnosed with the pneumonic plague, sparking fears of an outbreak of the highly contagious and deadly disease among Chinese citizens.
Government officials said that the two cases came from Inner Mongolia, and they are now being treated in a hospital in the Chaoyang District in Beijing, CNN reported.
Amid concerns that the two cases could spur the spread of the plague, as it did in the 14th century with the Black Death, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that there is an “extremely low risk” of that happening again.
The Chinese CDC said in a statement that they moved the two patients into quarantine and medicated anyone they could have infected, while launching an investigation to find others who may have been exposed to the plague, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The pneumonic plague is the deadlier of the three types, which also include the bubonic and septicemic plagues. Bubonic is the most common, and there are typically around a dozen cases in the U.S. each year. But the pneumonic plague is “almost always fatal if not treated,” the U.S. CDC says...

My husband and I traveled to China with a big group of Americans in 1981. China DOES produce BEAUTIFUL things: jewelry, carpets, cloth, SILK everything, the Xian soldiers in Terra Cotta -- many things.
However it was the FILTHIEST place I had ever seen. Yes, that includes parts of Africa, Central American and the Middle East.

Hysterical nonsense. The plague, y. pestis, is still common in the third world, and occasionally even pops up in the United States, where it has had minimal effect on humans (due to a lack of vector), but has just about wiped out black-footed prairie dogs and black-tailed ferrets.

This is very bad news, if true. Plague is usually transmitted by flea bites, and has a relatively long incubation period, which makes it possible to treat and cure. That’s why the plague cases in the U.S. are of little concern to the general population.
Pneumonic plague can be spread from person to person via airborne bacteria in sputum. It has a short incubation and can cause rapid death, even before a correct diagnosis is made.
The location of these two cases is also worrisome, as the Black Death likely came from there along the Silk Road. In addition, due to the population density of the poor countries in the region, a pneumonic plague outbreak would be hard to control. I hope the Chicoms are all over this.
