America’s Loneliest Roads, Mapped

Topping both lists—for the least traveled and most scenic— is Dalton Highway, which ferried an average of just 196 vehicles each day in 2015. (By comparison, the Alaska Highway saw an average of 344 vehicles per day, according to 2016 data.) Other least traveled roads include routes in Nevada, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Lucky for us there are lots of people that have ZERO clue just how vast this country is.😁

Nevada 360? Go there fairly often hunting. Not for city slickers.

I would have added South Dakota Highway 34 between Ft. Pierre and Sturgis. This is probably one of the most remote drives in the state. The first time I drove this route it was winter and I was working for the state Department of Health and was driving a dilapidated state fleet car. At the time there were Minuteman missile silos along the highway about half way to Sturgis. Having not seen a single vehicle for hours nor any ranches I resolved if my vehicle broke down I would make my way to one of the silos and kick the fence hoping to set off an alarm so that someone would come to get me before I froze to death.

I’ve spent a lot of time on Nevada’s US 50. I go up to Fallon 3 times a year to augment their people on the Fallon Tactical Training Range. I love that road. The scenery is amazing. The two playas between Fallon and Middlegate, the mountains and the Northern Nevada desert are beautiful. The stretch between Middlegate and Austin is one of the longest, straightest stretches I’ve ever driven. US 50 is by far my favorite road.

There is a considerable amount of nothing on CA SR 139. Watch for cows on the road...

I found a great green chile cheeseburger at Captain Jack's Stronghold, a restaurant on Rte. 139 just south of Tule Lake.

I worked on a cattle ranch east of Austin in the early 1980’s. When we rode near Hiway 50 we always wore our finest cowboy costumes...big hats, wild rags, all the silver we could hang on our rigs.

The tourists expected this and I imagine a bunch of us are stuck away in photo slides and prints in old shoe boxes.
We used to get a kick out of people stopping on the Hiway to take pics.

CA 62 from the point it meets with CA 177 is another beautiful lonely road. There is little traffic, and no people until you hit Wonder Valley outside of Twentynine Palms.

True and the placement of 369 in Nevada isn’t even close to where it is.

It is pretty nice. Probably some of the offshoot roads heading north from 50 are pretty desolate too.

I also drove the Dalton Highway as far as the Arctic Circle. I enjoyed the trip but the scenery got boring when it changed to tundra.

If you want lonely”... Here in southern UT we like to drive the BLM “roads”. Mostly dirt and rock (most graded), you hardly ever see anyone. They are all over the boonies.

360 not 369.

Sigh, off for finger warm-up exercises.

Yeah, if they can find anybody to kill... Would be great places to bury the bodies though.

Yup but cloudy which is interesting. Three weeks of 70 degrees was a nice break.
