Millions face power cuts as California fires spread

Californian officials warned on Saturday that "historic and extreme" wind conditions were set to fan raging wildfires in the north of the state as millions of residents face power cuts.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as the so-called Kincade Fire spread to 23,700 acres (9,591 hectares) after breaking out on Wednesday in the Sonoma wine region.

The blaze, which is burning in remote steep terrain, has destroyed about 50 structures and forced the evacuation of the small community of Geyserville and of nearby vineyard operations.

"This is definitely an event that we're calling historic and extreme," David King, meteorologist for the US National Weather Service, told Saturday's Los Angeles Times.

"What's making this event really substantial... is the amount of time that these winds are going to remain."

Hot, intense winds are expected to pick up on Saturday and last into Monday.

No rain since March. 100's of millions of tons of tinder. Temps in the 80s with 10% humidity. Sustained winds of 30-50mph, gusts to 80.

It's looking to be a bad week.

The incompetence of California government - and the Public Utility Commission in particular - is staggering.

I used to live in The People's Sewer of Kalifornia. It was always a bad week during fire season.

This will be followed by rain, which brought the flood season, then the mudslide season, ad infinitum, ad nauseaum .

Insanity is defined as the repetition of the same action always expecting a different result. Yep, that dump is insane.

Going with ‘bring the marshmallows and some sticks.’ All done with caring about their self-created unnecessary disasters.

I know the weather is extreme, but I bet 50 years of leftist rule is the real reason the power is being cut.

It’s both.

Neglect of the forests. Neglect of the grid.

And truly extreme weather.

Too bad in large areas of Cali you can’t hook them up to natural gas.

PS I bought my Generac stock last year after experiencing a 10 day power outage from Hurricane Florence, and using my Generac to provide power for that period...

“forced the evacuation of the small community of Geyserville...”

All the weird in Sonoma County rolled downhill into Geyserville.

True that. But unfortunately for Californians, two ready targets will instead get most of the blame here: Global Warming and Donald Trump.

I just say “most” there because PG&E will take a hit too. They are easy targets for a lawsuit.

Been there a few times. Mrs. L is Sonoma County born and raised. Petaluma to be exact.

Gorgeous country. Chock full of California strangeness.

Her parents moved up to El Dorado County 10 years or so ago. Smack in the middle of wildfire country. But it’s a hell of a lot more normal than Sonoma.

I’m surprised that California hasn’t outlawed the use of ‘fossil fuel’ generators yet. After all, they contribute to climate change.

They have restricted them. When you purchase a generator, look for "CARB Compliant" on the box, CARB being California Air Resources Board. If it isn't CARB compliant it isn't supposed to be sold or used in the state.
