Sure it’s legitimate, but must be recognized as such - there is a difference in general ability, hence the categories.
I guess they could have a black category too, for various academic endeavors. ;-)
BTW, we have categories by other aspects, too. There is age category, professional level, etc. All are legitimate.

Hence they refuse to call “sexes” exactly that, and also refuse to use “tranSEXUAL”, etc.
It does not matter whether that is the stated goals of the “trans” male atheletes or not. The result will be the same.
Nothing shocks the system into a clear focused sense of reality faster than an obvious but shocking absurdity!

It is up to the officials involved, or people above them, to change the rules so that competitors are determined by birth gender only.
Fair is fair.
College sports are paid for by male football and basketball. Girls sports have to have an equal number of sports scholarships. That means there are limited number (if any) of scholarships available for male athletes in other sports at smaller schools. There was a softball coach on the radio that noted if your girl was athletic, she could obtain the skills to earn a softball scholarship at a small college by attending one summer camp for softball. For the males, it was much more difficult and competitive to obtain a baseball scholarship.
Maybe they’ll find renewed joy in doing things that girls are good at.
That’s “bullying,” to make fun of homos and other assorted weirdos.
This here is gender appropriation and liberals are for it. Their ideology is not guided by a moral compass but who is more "woke".
I am a male and I think this is so wrong. To girls and women in sports where lousy male athletes decide they can compete and win against the girls, where they couldn't against the boys. Just self-identify as a girl and bingo, you get all of the trophies.
Where are the adults in leadership who should be stopping this gross injustice?
Whether this woman votes liberal or conservative makes no matter to the poor girls themselves who have lost their dreams and chances at winning.

The boys are losers in the boys' competitions and now by calling themselves girls, they're winning all of the trophies.

That is indeed a good question, but it's one to be treated carefully because we are dealing with mentally ill teenagers (mostly).
The number of trans invaders of girls' and women's sports remains extremely small. (That's what makes it possible for so many people on the left to simply ignore the issue.) The same cases come up again and again. Once in awhile, a new one crops up, but it is not an avalanche. So what's going on?
In general, serious athletes have a good deal of pride involved in their performance. Almost all boys and men, even those with gender confusion problems, know that they look foolish -- in anything other than casual co-rec play -- competing against the girls and women. And they know that they will be regarded with contempt if they cross over, compete unfairly against the girls and women, and crow about winning. Clearly -- at least to date -- very few are willing to do it. Most, even among the trans kids, have enough pride to respect their opponents and value fair competition.
So: my provisional guess is that each of the notorious cases of athletic cheating on gender may be unique and that there is something else going on aside from the gender confusion per se.
In the Connecticut case, I've always wondered if there might be a racial angle involved. That wouldn't apply to the other trans cases with which I'm familiar, but it kind of stands out in the Connecticut situation.
