A massive fire has erupted at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery in Southwest Philadelphia shaking nearby homes and sending thick smoke into the air. Homes as far away as South Jersey were rocked by a series of explosions as the blaze, which erupted shortly after 4 a.m., burned. Some residents in Philadelphia said the explosions knocked art off their walls. The fire is contained on the property off Passyunk Avenue of the refinery, fire officials said shortly before 6 a.m. Authorities have not yet said if any workers were injured or not.

Rizzo was a good mayor AND a good cop. Back in those days, Philadelphia was considered something of a jewel in our Commonwealth and Pittsburgh was the $#*+hole city to avoid. How times have changed!

Grew up in North Philly myself.

It was a nice place to grow up, for a while.

Any idea what got thrown through the air at the beginning when the explosion just happened?

It looked like a car.

Back in 1972 there was a chemical plant explosion on River Rd in Buffalo that rocked our house many miles away.

I drove by it later and it was a mess.

It’s incredible that no one is missing or injured.

Praise God for that.

“Wouldn’t be Iran sending a signal would it, via hezbollah crazies moled in the U.S.”

That is certainly something to take into consideration.

I still think the best terrorism muslims could do is make things like that look like an accident so suspicion does not fall on them.

Then when accused, they can play innocent and the victim and whine about islamaphobia.

Look for the gougers to use this as an excuse to jack the price of gas right at the start of summer driving season.

Yup, right when prices were starting to fall again.

That part I mentioned about the baseball bat escort was no exaggeration, either, for the record.

Thugs catcalling at grandmothers; that let’s you know when it’s time to move.

Yep. None built since 1976. Climate Nuts won’t allow it.

looked like a car

That's what I thought at first, too. But when the camera zooms out, you can see cars going by in the foreground and they're much smaller than that thing was.

Someone else mentioned seeing a huge tank of some kind flying off to the left early on in the explosion and that seems reasonable. But who knows? It could have been any huge chunk of debris. It didn't appear to be spinning or tumbling as it flew off and that seems a little odd, though certainly not impossible.

“Have a relative in Abington.”

Still quite a ways from that refinery. I grew up next door in Willow Grove.

I wouldn’t worry about that too much. When gas prices begin to fall then Harrisburg just takes that as an opportunity to jack up the per gallon gas tax. And by the time it is actually enacted the gas prices are rebounding.

Is this the refinery that Delta bought into many years ago, to ensure a supply of Jet A?

“back in the day when law enforcement actually had a say in how the city was run.”

Law enforcement is supposed to have a say in how a city is run?

I guess now we can dispense with all those pointless elections.
