The White House is considering a proposal to make it easier to deport low-income (legal) immigrants who are dependent on public benefits. The Department of Justice has written a draft regulation that, if implemented, would greatly expand the number of immigrants in the U.S. who could be subject to deportation for using public benefits, Reuters reported Friday. The new proposal is part of the Trump administration’s larger effort to limit immigration from low-income foreign nationals.
Such benefits include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as “food stamps;” Supplemental Security Income (SSI) doled out to the elderly and disabled people; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Section 8 housing vouchers and various Medicaid benefits. If the draft regulation is put into effect, it would be a sharp reversal from longstanding policy.

I imagine that in some left wing States, immigrants have been eagerly pursued, to get them signed up for benefits, and a bunch probably came to those States for that reason.
In the 1880’s wave 30% of the new immigrants returned to the old country. Couldn’t hack it.
There was a time when we called it welfare.
In 1991 I was required to sign an affidavit declaring I would not take any benefits as a condition of entry to the country. Has this changed?
This is good news.
Only in an insane world would it be considered normal to take from the working to give to those who *won’t* work; it is even more bizarre when those who won’t work are not even citizens.
Why on earth should the US take on the burden of other countries’ poverty? Shouldn’t other countries see to their own poverty problems?
For legal immigrants, I do not think anything has changed. But illegal invaders get all kinds of public assistance, ostensibly so they can care for their anchor baby children.

It just has not been enforced.
For more than a half century, the only ones who got deported for taking benefits, were the few whom the Government sent bills trying to recoup benefits, who flat out refused to pay.
In many places, Green Card Holders are not eligible for benefits. But in some left wing States (I believe that New York is one), they are routinely signed up for them.
I knew some immigrants who got Green Cards for serving as translators in Afghanistan, who were denied benefits in Virginia - but their friends with the same Visas who went to New York, were signed right up.

It is good for folks to recognize that the Trump Administration is working to control immigration in many ways.
White House adviser Stephen Miller has said that there is a broad effort that will be rolled out in the coming months, to address “welfare seeking” among some immigrants.
HUD recently changed their rules to deny public housing to illegal immigrants. Many more rule changes are likely to come - they have been studying this Government-wide. In this case, they seek to reverse a precedent dating back to 1948.
One of the elegant things about this approach, is that it is a quality cut. It selectively targets the lowest performers among immigrants - those of least benefit to this Country. Moving to a more merit-based immigration system is a main effort of the Trump Administration - and they are implementing real changes.
If they are here they are using up public benefits.

I resent the fig-leaf term ”public benefits.” How about using the truthful word of “handouts.”
Didn’t much of the immigration tangles start when they decided NOT to give ‘bracero’ permits to folks who wanted to come to work here and return to Mexico with their money? Seems like they forced them to immigrate and want to be citizens ....
A proposal is nothing but talk. Sign it into law and get on with it.
Yeah, i remember that. Known as the Dept of Public Welfare until early seventies, I believe; then Dept of Social Services. Now Human Services.

This won’t be a change to law (which would require Congress). It will be a change to regulations (which will require a public comment period, and will likely face lawsuits).
Reportedly, there are a slew of such changes on the way. Some won’t require the comment period (like recent new guidance to Border Patrol Officers interviewing those claiming asylum). Other changes to law have been requested from Congress (emergency legislation to address amnesty, deportation of unacompanied children, and family detention). The Left will have to defend on a very broad front, while the FISA-gate scandals are also breaking.

It has always ebbed and flowed, based on relative conditions here and there.
The welfare benefits though, have been a steady magnet for the worst-performing groups of immigrants - the sick, lame, lazy, unskilled, and uneducated. It is just bad policy.
