The only thing that seemed to work in our local recycling program was the yard debris pickup. Even food scraps and food-contaminated paper products could go in the yard debris bin. They actually generated a significant amount of compost in this program, most of which the garbage company customers could pick up for free (well, as part of the cost of the recycling program). It’s been the only time I’ve seen any benefit to a recycling program of any kind.

In the 60’s in CA most everybody had a concrete trash incinerator in the back yard. Dumps burned waste too.

I grew up in San Francisco on a hillside with a wide view of the city's Mission District. Every Sunday morning we would see hundreds of smoke plumes fro m backyards as people burned their trash. Same with my family, we had a 55 gallon steel barrel and burned our trash. Wet garbage got picked up by the scavenger service. We could see a constant smoke plume and flames from a tall smokestack on the east side of the city, nearly 24/7. Burning got banned in the early 1960's.

The other countries (3rd world) who buy recycled trash won’t take ours because it’s not pristine. The anal European countries separate everything down to the molecule and have to be perfect by law. We are slobs and throw used diapers into our recycling.

As an enlightened country, we’re so rich, we wash our special trash.

“Very few chemicals are involved in the creation of new paper. “

perhaps back in the old days but when I was in the printing industry 20 years ago, there were Clinton era regulations that of course added more chemicals and raised production costs of paper and carton production in order to somehow reduce the volume of trees that got cut down.

or something like that.

The folks gathering our recyclables wanted us to clean them up before putting them in the bins...then the recycle bins started getting emptied into the same trucks as were picking up the trash..finally weaned the wife of the waste of time of checking pieces of plastic for the right number before disposing of them.

Well done Bob. Our daughter could read before we placed her in public school which may have helped. Also the public schools in our area are not as crowded (fewer students per teacher). She is the supervising Medical Lab Technician at our local hospital now. We are very proud of her.

‘Our daughter could read before we placed her in public school’

Thanks, and OUTSTANDING!!! If a kid can read prior to attending public schools, then their system is DEFEATED, because there is simply no way that they can ‘unteach’ reading, which, of course, would be their goal, in order to ‘bring her down a few notches’, to a level more ‘representative’ of the rest of the world [except Asia, of course].

NEVER!

I think most real schooling is home schooling whether the student goes to a private or public school. Where parents give a damn and act like an adult, the children generally turn out fine. There was one of each in my family and both are very educated and prosperous.

Incorrect evaluation of our educational system leads to the conclusion that it is a total pile of crap. Taking out the scores of the Incorrigibly Non-teachable and those w/o English at home would make the rest comparable to European schools.

There would be a strong correlation between percent of minority students and scores.

this sounds a lot like what I do with trash and such ... not much recycling here other than beer cans.

Only 16.5% recycle value?

I find that hard to believe. But then again, the govt is in charge

The only product that it makes sense for households to recycle is aluminum cans. It’s why they pay us for it.
