#RedForEd: West Virginia Teachers Strike over Charter School Bill Governor Vows to Veto
Breitbart ^ | 20 Feb 2019 | Dr. Susan Berry

Thousands participate in a protest at the Arizona Capitol for higher teacher pay and school funding on the first day of a state-wide teachers strike Thursday, April 26, 2018, in Phoenix. A sea of teachers clad in red shirts and holding "Money for Schools" signs reached the Arizona Capitol to …

West Virginia teachers will continue to strike into Wednesday, although Republican Gov. Jim Justice has vowed since January he will not sign into law an education bill allowing charter schools and education savings accounts in the state.

The New York Times, however, reported the teachers’ strike led to an immediate “victory” when the West Virginia House of Delegates voted Tuesday to table the bill. Similarly, the Associated Press reported union leaders were celebrating the decision of the West Virginia House of Delegates to kill the education bill that led to the strike:

The House just voted on a motion made by Delegate Caputo to postone consideration of SB 451 indefinately. This motion would kills the bill without actually voting on the bill.

A correct vote on this motion is a ‘yes’ vote. The motion passed 53-45

The bill is now dead!!!— WVEA (@WVEAnews) February 19, 2019

The West Virginia strike – the second one in a year – is being fueled by #RedForEd, a social media campaign that is the mantra of a socialist movement supported by the national teachers’ unions and first launched in Arizona by Marxist teacher Noah Karvelis.

“It was clear today that the House heard our voice,” American Federation of Teachers’ West Virginia chapter President Fred Albert said Tuesday about the tabling of the bill, although he added that the teachers would be “staying out one more day to make sure that this is a dead bill tomorrow.”

These people frighten me.

If they don't frighten you, you are not paying attention.

Are there any conservatives left in the republican party? They all act like pajama boy in the face of the least bit of conflict. The republican party is dead in my book.

The Hippity-Hoppity thing is a communist agitator ... its purpose is to prepare the way for the communist soldiers. it probably won’t become one ... they’ll probably kill it. Ask Lavrenti Beria how that works ...

Veto it. Charter schools are only public schools with taxpayer payouts to special interests. PRIVATE schools are what are needed.

IOW, he should sign the bill, blaming the strikers for their failure, then give them a return-to-work-or-be-fired date. Then fire those who do not return.

The law states a child will be under gummint indoctrination 180 days a year ... 180 seven hour days, five days a week, with attention diverting sports and et cetera's .... all under the guise of "education" ...

vs.

Someone that actually wants to teach a child real, useable knowledge and try to convey wisdom.

Knowledge is the collection of facts/data

Wisdom is the ability to logically USE it.

Charter schools - special interests??

Please explain & define how that is so?

All I know about charter schools is they are more free to decide how they operate then public schools.

Perhaps free to be non-union?
Which I suspect is the real issue WV!

The GOP is packed with politicians who are progressives that suck up the conservative votes and constantly betray the constituency. They’re not soft conservatives, they are hard line progressives who simply lie when running for office, then under GOP leadership, take turns making conservative votes to keep up appearances of conservativeness.

Charter schools fall under all the same regulations that public schools do. Very limited freedom to decide how to operate, except they often have separate collective bargaining agreements. Always politically vulnerable, they typically “buy off” left-wing city governments by heavily promoting transgenderism, communism, etc. And student perforance is usually unexceptional. (The allegation that student achievement is no better than public schools isn’t quite fair, because they typically are only authorized to operate in the worst functioning school systems, but that comparison is made against state averages.)

Despite the low pay for teachers, charter schools rarely save much money because they simply pocket the savings from salaries. (Often they are managed by “non-profits,” but that only means they don’t distribute profits to share-holders, not that they don’t make profits.)

That said, you are absolutely correct that the real reason teachers hate them is because they are free to be non-union. But again... that only means more profit, not actual taxpayer savings.

Contrarily, parochial schools usually operate at steep losses, subsidized heavily by parishes and dioceses. Even many non-religious private schools are donor-funded and foundation-funded.

Thanks!

That’s puts me in the somewhat uncomfortable position of agreeing with WV teacher unionistas!
