At the time, Oregon had very high rates of suicide due to severe depression which was credited to the dreary weather and constant dense fog in some areas.
I'm normally a positive, upbeat, happy person. But after four years of living in the Rogue River Valley in southern Oregon, where we could go weeks and weeks without the depressing fog lifting, I moved to Arizona.
The sun shines in Arizona most of the year and my own personal mood brightened almost immediately.
I suspect the cause of these high suicide and mental illness rates is due to the same thing. Cloudy, dreary, foggy weather which can drive one stir-crazy.

Every Christian and Jewish student with good caring and conservative parents will be judged as mentally ill.
