That approach will increase cost to consumers. If all car imports were charged 25% tariffs, we all will be paying much more for American made cars.
Prosperity increases when consumers can get more bang for their buck, not less.
I’m happy for your TRUCK and you. But this thread about CARS. By the way, I had an ‘81 RX-7 that I got rid of with 400,00 miles because the seat lost all of it’s stuffing. Got an ‘87 RX-7 which I put 3000,000 miles on and went to Hyundai Tiburon in 2003 because my job demanded long range traveling. Put 340,000 on it and bought a 2007 Tib, drove it for three years and retired from the job and still use the car to this day withe 106,000 miles. But you enjoy your truck.
Perhaps, but with more Americans working and real wages rising, they will be able to afford it.
American makers will still be competing among themselves on price.
Prosperity doesn’t increase just because prices to consumers get cheap. Consumers need jobs to remain consumers. Consumers need good paying jobs. People without jobs, cease to be consumers. Then it doesn’t matter how cheap goods are. Nobody can afford them.
I recently watched a cop series produced and distributed in China.
The cops were always depicted as driving Buicks.

The notion that a pos vehicle from China would be saturated with toxic stuff, from lead to you-name-it, never even came up. The story last winter was that Buick is going to build cars in China and bring them here. Has that begun yet?
40,000 miles isn’t that much, but I will be honest; 3 million miles is pretty impressive.
Good idea, but as soon as a law is passed there will be retaliation and attempts to circumvent tariffs.
You can be sure the Chinese will strike back with their own tariffs on US products. Don't know what yet.
Getting around Tariffs: Back during the 70's gas crisis, Detroit lobbied for tariffs on foreign cars. They got "quotas" instead, but the intention was the same: to make US products more attractive. With limited supply, prices for Japanese cars went up compared to Detroit's.
This should have helped Detroit, but not so much. Rather than recapturing market share, the big three chose to cash in instead, raising their own car prices to match their competition. Short-term, they made money, but in the long run they saved Japan's market share.
Some companies tried to exploit loopholes in the law. Some cars were "made in America" by shipping all the parts in and assembling them here. One Japanese company opted to remove the rear seat from its compact SUV, selling it as a "truck" instead. Not a car, so no quota trouble.
I guess I'm saying that tariffs are a good and constitutional method to protect our economy, but can be abused or turned back against us if poorly applied. There will be attempts to exploit these rules on both sides of the ocean...
One of the top selling cars in China is the Buick Excelle, which is pretty close to the Verano sold here.

Could you say that in español please because the drive train is made in Mexico. Without those, you got a metal shed with nice plastic trim (which is made in Canada -parlez vous francais?). Oh, and some of the electronics are indeed made in China as are the majority of aftermarket parts. All that get’s done here is overpaid union workers snap everything together at an Assembly Plant.
I hate it, especially the aftermarket parts situation. Even the old names have gone to China.
I’m a Chevy guy btw but the big three are all doing pretty much the same. What was that bailout for? I forget. Maybe they needed to build new factories elsewhere.

Everyone who keeps repeating the line “25% tariffs, we all will be paying much more for American made cars” is wrong.
If 25% tariffs go into effect, car production moves to the US from Canada, Japan, etc.
There will be minor price increases as US labor is used. But that is minor, and no where 25% increase.
The Chinese don’t even buy Chinese Junk ,they think it’s Junk
