I am into my seventh decade now, and I find no shortage of good new music to listen to.

There is just so much great 21st century stuff out there once you get outside the commercial pop and rock strait jackets:

Dave Alvin, Eleni Mandell, Kelly Joe Phelps, Pokey LaFarge, the Avett Brothers, the Steeldrivers, Bela Fleck, Nickel Creek, Charlie Parr, Jorma Kaukonen, Lucinda Williams, Popa Chubby, Tab Benoit, Chip Taylor, Gilliam Welch, Iris Dement, Junior Brown, Neko Case, the Mavericks, the Wailin Jennys, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Frank Vignola, Mark O' Connor, Tommy Emmanuel, John Hiatt, Stan Ridgway, the Blasters, Todd Snider, Chuck Prophet, the Iguanas . . . I could easily list thirty more.

A lot of different kinds of music, even some rap, if it’s the clever stuff not the raunchy stuff. A former garage bander who made a nickel or two on the local scene. Most of my taste is second hand these days via music used in TV commercials. You’ve got to be a treasure hunter these days, never know what you’ll find.

I can dig that. (It’s not “blues”) but my wife left an old Shirley Bassey CD in the car, and I’d never heard her do all but, I think, 3 of the songs. It was rather fun to listen to, even if the sound quality was mediocre at times.

Now, I remember when I first heard S.B. do “The Rhythm Divine” (on a “Yello” album!) It was a few years ago / I was over 55 at the time, and it blew me away. I’d never heard anything quite like it. I really LIKE new music (to me) if well done!

Your life-preferences are formed when you're young?

That's why liberals wanted to take over the government schools and education system.

And they did did exactly that.

That's why sex perverts wanted to change the rules and the culture so they could gain access to young children in their formative years.

Now we have perverts in positions such as teachers, Scout leaders and Camp Counselors and legally allowed to adopt children.

That's one reason why liberals want to minimize the influence of religion and remove it from family life as much as possible.

That's why children at government schools can't have a Christmas play, say a morning prayer, or pray when playing organized sports.

Yep. It’s called “maturing”. I’m 64 and though I have a fondness for some (quite a bit, actually) new music, I have not really sought it out since I was about 30.

And the funny thing is that I used to play in a lot of bands (bass and vocals). I did seek out new music for our shows, but not because I was doing it for me. I was doing it for the younger crowd. It caused me to appreciate some newer acts, like Pink.

Instrumentals only for me ... any type ... any era ...

They can all keep their craappy poetry ‘messages’ outta my head ... all of them.

Same here - discovered a trove of music on Newsgroups some years ago and have discovered more “new” stuff than I had ever imagined was out there.

I very much believe you are who you are going to be at a very young age. I have said this for decades: “Your first seven years are your first 70 years.”

I actually have stopped listening to all the popular music of my youth.

I’ve found that to be the case for me too. But I played in a few classic rock bands. I’ve gigged over 400 of them and just got burned out. What’s kind of odd is that it’s caused me to like the ones I never (or rarely) played and I like them for the same reason someone may like a fully restored older car. Stuff like The Monkees, Strawberry Alarm Clock, etc. Kinda weird.

Very good point.

I'd just say it doesn't have to be recent -- I can find a new-to-me 30 (or more) yr. old tune with a little different style than what I'm used to (or maybe a different style for that musician or group) and like it a lot. See my comment about Shirley Bassey, above.

(I'll have to check out about 2/3 of those names you listed, now...)

:-)

“since most musicians believe in socialism (that is, no private property, no property rights)”

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people living life in peace
You...

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

I think the key is the phrase “seek out”. I’ve been exposed to, and like, a lot of new artists. Heck, I’ve bought Lorde and ZZ Ward on vinyl, but I didn’t seek them out. I discovered their stuff via Pandora channels.

Older people have usually moved on unless they are in the business and forced to seek the stuff out.

It’s not about liking new stuff, it’s about actively searching for it. A lot of us would just say we have higher priorities.

Actually, as I have gotten older I have gone back further in time for my musical tastes.

Of late I have been groovin’ on the “big band swing” material from the late 30’s to the late 40’s. It is some of the best rock ‘n roll you will ever hear.

I’m with you on rap and hip-hop. I don’t consider it music. But there really is a lot of good stuff out there now. The problem is that the industry is mostly one-hit wonders now, and lots of them.

Check out Phillip Phillips, or “Of Monsters and Men” from Iceland. interesting stuff, and no rap.

I stopped listening to new music around the mid -90s when I was in my 30s but I blame cRap music for that. It was as if music left me, not the other way around.

Now, I like good instrumentals, but lyrics are often MOST of my enjoyment. Tunes like “Dream On” (Russ Ballard, not Aerosmith, tho’ I like their tune too) kept me going more than once...

Ok, so for whatever reason, I gravitated toward positive & supportive “messages”, and still do. You can knock it - I’d say it may have saved my life.

If you’re into sad songs, try this. Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris.

“Mark Knopfler wrote this after learning about the phone calls made by victims of 9-11, to their wives/husbands/parents/friends/children. What must they have been thinking as they awaited the certain outcome?”

Absolute rubbish! If that we’re true, I’d never liked any 90’s or 00’s bands at all.

It’s actually true for me.

1988 was the last good year.

I could “Name that Tune” in one or two notes on anything made in the 70s and 80s up to 1989.

After that... Forget it.
