Retreat's Risky Lessons

It’s just hours into Camp Diversity, a leadership retreat for high school students, but the warmth of the community circle, “Power of Hugs” exercise and hot chocolate is quickly fading.

In a campground hall deep in the Santa Cruz Mountains, 55 teenagers have been ordered to separate by race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. By groups, the children of Silicon Valley engineers and attorneys, house cleaners and gardeners are sent outside, while their peers are instructed to call out every slur and stereotype they know about them.

For decades, tens of thousands of students across the country have gone through versions of these exercises at retreats long known as Camp Anytown. The Anytown retreats, run by a loose network of nonprofit social justice groups, say they instill leadership and build empathy by prompting young people to confront difficult issues such as racism and sexism in a safe setting far from home and school.

I remember twenty plus years ago a young college student of mine made a special trip to my office because my daughter was planning to go to Anytown. She had been the year before. She told me how horrible it was, and how the white students were basically made to scrape and bow and self immolate.

We withdrew our daughter from this Bolshevik nonsense immediately.

I always thought this sort of silliness would be something I’d be immune to if I ever faced it. But, i had to attend an Unconscious Bias training session a few months ago where I sat for 4 hours watching video after video where the villain was always the only white, heterosexual, non-disabled male in the scene. The class was packed with POCs and women to keep the WMs from speaking out. I felt sick when I left that class. I was possibly triggered.

But then I went to Sonny’s and ate some BBQ and drove my 435 hp car over to the range and put 200 rounds through one of my Glocks and I felt better again. I had my White Privilege back!! Life is good. All hail the Patriarchy!

Any problem seems better when you apply firepower, horsepower, and cooked pig.

I used to tell them at work that I was the only one on the floor that didn’t have a speck of unconscious bias in me. It was always quite conscious.

It was also fun calling out the liberals when you could twist anything they said into unconscious bias.

Wow. Disgusting. Abuse occurring in the name of “social justice” awareness! Only thing redeeming about this article is the majority of clinicians interviewed slammed and criticized the methods...and I thought psychiatry was a lost field. As always, the losers are the kids.

I always say, and I mean this with all sincerity, that Democrats in general are obsessed by race. If you think everything revolves around race, and ethnicity, and if you think it important to judge and organize people around race and ethnicity, if you think its impossible that there is anyone out there who isn’t similarly obsessed by race, you’re a Democrat.

If on the other hand, you don’t give two hoots about race, if you care about character, and philosophy, and behavior, and general decency, you’re probably a Republican. And if you aren’t, you are headed our way. Welcome to the family.
