Most of the discussion of the Trump administration's decision not to defend the Affordable Care Act — and to urge the courts to throw out its protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions — has focused on what happens to the individual insurance market. But the political impact may be even greater.
Why it matters: Protections for people with pre-existing conditions are hugely popular, and the administration may have handed Democrats their strongest health care weapon yet — because now they can make the case that the administration has gone to court to take away protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions.
The case is also likely to drag on, so it could be the political gift that keeps on giving through 2020, even if it is eventually thrown out.

Above is from 5 years ago. From what I understand, Trump wants states to form thrir own high risk insurance pools with assistance from the Feds in the firm of block grants. Works for me.
Have the Dems shown they are ready to attack any actual issue?
It is now June and the election is a few short months away.
The Dems have gotten fat and lazy allowing the media to attack Trump for the smallest ‘infraction’ now matter how small and/or imaginary. The left in general have expended so much powder on what they know to be a frame-up (Russia) that they have all but abandoned anything of substance.
They can blame Hillary for hanging about but the nominal leaders are still Pelosi and Schumer with an assist from Sanders (who is still not an actual Democrat) and they couldn’t lead a fish to swim.
To claim the Dems have an issue to run on assumes the Dems are interested in issues full stop. Their outrage at losing has blinded them to taking any steps to recover. The media have convinced them that Trump Hatred alone can motivate voters but evidence of this is scant.
Once again, Obama’s presidency is paying negative dividends. He essentially fulfilled every leftist pipe dream domestically and abroad with disaster following closely behind. A goodie that costs dearly and is wrapped in miles of red tape is not the electoral winner they imagine.
A general in war, and, this is a quiet revolution, does not always get to pick the time and place of a battle. The case came up now and Trump’s generals had no choice but to respond to it now. To take the opposite tact, supporting Obamacare in any form, would have demoralized his own forces and caused more damage than sticking with the strength of his polices and convictions. Sometimes you have to trust the voters to see past the one or two things they like to view the larger picture.
Now would be the time for Trump’s generals, whoever leads various efforts, to stress what he plans to replace Obamacare with. He needs to go on the offensive. “Tweets away!!!”
Insurance for those with pre-existing conditions is not insurance.
It’s like buying home owners insurance AFTER your house burns down.
High risk pools were limited in what they would cover, were horrendously expensive for those forced to turn to them for coverage, and were not offered by all states. And currently there is no plan to fund high-risk pools on the table. There is no Obamacare alternative on the table, though a few weeks ago the President promised one by now. So until there is, and unless that plan offers a viable alternative, this is something the Democrats can use against the Republicans.
Perception is a big part of elections. The perception that the Democrats can spin on this isn't good.
This just happened Friday I believe. The Democrats haven't finished their happy dance yet.
The problem isn’t Trump. Trump long ago laid out what he’d like to see. The problem is the uniparty’s stranglehold on Congress.
Argue semantics if you want but that doesn't change the fact that this is one of the few popular features of Obamacare and the GOP is working to eliminate it without any alternative. Optics on this won't be good.
The courts are highly unlikely to resolve the issue before the election. If they did, Congress could be called back into session to provide a legislative fix.
And if perception was that big a deal, we’d have Hillary for prez.
Oh so now they want to take away a "benefit" that people really like? Just gets better and better.
The perception in 2016 was that in Donald Trump we had someone who would clean the swamp, fix our problems, solve immigration, and make America great again. That's what beat Hillary.
There is zero chance that the courts will decide before November. So the Democrats can use it against the Republicans.

While it is an issue,it is not presently an issue that overshadows all the other more stridently visible stuff.

Sure. He said he wanted coverage for all with better choices at a fraction of the cost of Obamacare. That didn't work.
The Leftists (and even some who call themselves conservative) are salivating for a way to have Trump trip over his shoelaces.
We even see some of those people here on FR, they just don’t have the guts to say what they really feel.
If this is all the Leftists have (and that is indeed all they have) then I like our chances. They can take their twisted hopes and choke on them.
They have had to resort to hoping (like Bill Maher does) that the booming economy will tank and turn people against Trump. Doesn’t matter to them that people would lose jobs and cause our country to slide further into debt, because, don’t you know, our “freedom” (the Leftist version of “freedom”) is at stake, and eggs will have to be broken to save it.
Disgusting.
You can’t have Obamacare style guarantees and have a free market in insurance/healthcare.
There are other ways to address the pre-existing conditions issue, but yes, the GOP needs to have its story right on it.
Trump never said that. What he wants is competition. And then a safety net for folks who want insurance but fell through the cracks.
