I'm asking why they were there. Why does someone travel from Massachusetts, New York and such to Mississippi? Weren't there enough problems in Baltimore, Detroit, or Washington?

Just when you had me thinking you were an adult, you prove you're a child, and a dull one at that.

You really need to familiarize yourself with what life was like for many in Mississippi 50 years ago.

Or maybe just admit that you don't care about anything but your asinine theory.

DiogenesLamp: "By 'political purposes', do you refer to some means of gaining political power, such as in Washington DC?
So people from the NorthEast, deliberately travel to the South to stir up racial troubles because it somehow translates into power in Washington?"

As always, DiogenesLamp confuses Democrats for Republicans.
As far as I'm concerned, that whole "60s thing" was a family squabble amongst Democrats -- Northeastern Democrat media versus Southern Democrat racists.
Republicans played a minor role in the media spectacle, and Northern Democrats defeated their racist Southern kinfolk.
Here's what one of the most powerful Northeastern Power Broker said about it:

LBJ was a Texas Democrat.

jmacusa: "LBJ was a Texas Democrat."

Sure, but shhhh... don't tell DiogenesLamp, he thinks all the really bad people were "Northeastern Power Brokers" and it would disillusion him to learn different.
That's why I didn't mention it.

Gee, maybe they were motivated by the horrible realization that a segment of the American population were being brutally disenfranchised simply because of their skin color.

If I have a choice between "milk of human kindness" and acquiring and holding more political power, I'm gonna assume the motive is going to be the more evil of the two.

Look up LBJ. Racist Southern Democrat turned oh so very concerned for poor blacks. What was his motivation? Political power.

LBJ was racist Southern Democrat. I’m well aware of that.

The effort to manipulate public opinion for the purpose of gaining power was not limited to just Racist Southern Democrats. It was also practiced by Racist Northern Liberals.

And yet today LBJ's once solid Democrat South is now solid red-states, so who really gained & who lost political power?

And, iirc, LBJ's equal rights laws only passed with Republican support, suggesting there was more than raw power at work -- possibly even some milk of human kindness?

It’s a given just about anyone seeking power does the same.
