Publix suspends political contributions amid statewide protests (Camera Hogg Wins)
Tampa Bay Times ^ | May 25, 2018 | Steve Bousque

The supermarket giant acknowledges its support of Adam Putnam has "led to a divide in our community."

Publix, facing consumer boycotts, student protests and threats to its wholesome image for its generous support of Adam Putnam's bid for governor, announced Friday it is suspending all corporate campaign contributions immediately.

The popular retailer, facing a rapidly escalating public relations crisis fueled largely by social media and the debate over guns, issued a statement at the start of the three-day Memorial Day holiday weekend acknowledging the "divide" that it has caused by its unprecedented financial support of Putnam's campaign.

"At Publix, we respect the students and members of the community who have chosen to express their voices on these issues," the company said. "We regret that our contributions have led to a divide in our community. We did not intent to put our associates and the customers they serve in the middle of a political debate. At the same time, we remain committed to maintaining a welcoming shopping experience for our customers. We would never knowingly disappoint our customers or the communities we serve."

The company's action suggested that the furor over its contributions was having a significant effect as the 2018 political campaign attracts growing attention from Florida voters.

My guess is their business will still drop off. We’ll probably be seeing a rash of armed robberies at these stores, with the crooks knowing there won’t be any CCW’s in the vicinity

Publix is an exceptional grocery store. I doubt any of this will come to pass.

Everyone who does nothing but make fun of Hogg's name/face/etc ought to have figured out that he is the designated spokesman of community organized gun confiscation, and all the snark in the world won't even slow the movement down. Publix was willing to cave because Bloomberg, Soros, Paul Allen, the DNC, etc either scare the living F out of them, or they as a corporation agree with them (or a bit of both). Hogg is the spokesman who can't be criticized because he is a "survivor," and few corporations have the stones to tell him to shove it.

As for boycotting Publix, that's great, but it probably won't amount to much. Better would be to have local shooters, hunters and CCWs go flash picketing in the lot, tying Publix to socialist "gun control" of the past with professional graphics, not "Granny Clampett" signage. Hang the gun-free utopias of angry young Nazis nd Communists around Publix's neck, because they are enabling the new, American version.

Me too. I have a sphere of influence of thousands, and let them know.
Bye, Publix. Having millennial people in marketing without a deep understanding of history or their rights was foolish.
Bye.

I understand what you’re saying but we work. I emailed them to let them know they are losing about 800.00 a month in one of their Murfreesboro, TN stores. I love their deli/bakery and so does my elderly Mother. We will make do with Kroger.

I called
their customer service department
when their announcement came out.
I told the young gal on the other
end that I was a proud member of
the NRA. She hung up on me. Yep,
that’s “exceptional”.
Just like schools and gun free zones,
it’s my opinion that they have painted
themselves as a target. I digress
if proven wrong.

I understand what you’re saying but we work.

The left knows and counts on the fact that few who punch a clock or farm have the time to show up for street theater or genuine torch/pitchfork work.

But time had best be made for it.

Everyone can at least send an email. I shop at Publix regularly, but no more. Dang shame—good stores; poor management.

Yes, time had best be made for it. I get that and so does my husband and lots of people we know. But how does it get started, when does it get started and when do we do it. a lot of us are willing but we can’t just up and do it on a few week’s notice. Maybe we should be but we aren’t leftists and live in reality.

make no mistake tho, when the SHTF, we are prepared.

Publix is an exceptional store, but they stepped in it this time. This is the email I just sent to their corporate office;

“I am a veteran and a long-time Publix shopper. I support ALL of our Constitution, including the First and Second Amendments.

In response to your decision to pull support from a pro-business candidate based on pressure from gun control groups, my family and I will no longer patronize any of your stores. I generally preferred your stores, and spent more knowing I was supporting a local business that appeared to be well run and focused on its primary market.

Not giving to any candidate is probably a good policy given the current climate, but pulling your support in such a public fashion is an action that puts your company on the side of those who would limit free speech and our right to self defense. For this reason, I can no longer shop at my favorite local grocery store.”

I doubt I’m the only person who feels this way. Most of my friends are serious Second Amendment supporters and they all shop at Publix. If they hear from enough of us, they may pull their head out. Otherwise, it’s bavk to the commissary for me. Publix is more convenient and carries a larger selection, but I can do without if they don’t turn this around.

Personally, I want ALL corporations’ money out of politics and also advocacy groups/agendas. Go back to funding ballets and orchestras.

I am not bugged by this. I see hope that maybe corps are starting to realize how stupid it is to contribute to involve themselves in activism.

Look how utterly stupid Starbucks looks.

The problem is they won’t know who is not shopping, Hogg supporters or Putnam supporters. There were plenty of shoppers today when I went in. Just like any other Friday afternoon. Parking lot full.
