After Kim Jong Un called the VP names the only possible course of action was to respond this way; Trump compliments Kim while reminding him of the subjugated nature of his military abilities. To have gone ahead with the meeting without forcing the DPRK to come back to the table would be disastrous, diplomatically, and start any negotiations off with Kim Jong Un as the superior actor.

Trump is negotiating from a position of strength and he will not cede that position -period. Trump isn’t looking for pyrrhic victory’s like Obama in say the Iran deal. Trump isn’t trying to make lemonade because someone handed him a lemon. He’s not accepting the lemon. It’s been so long since we had a real leader people don’t remember what it looks like.
