Facebook wants your naked photos to stop revenge porn
BBC ^ | 23 May 2018 | BBC

Facebook is asking British users to send naked photos of themselves to the social network, to try to stop revenge porn.

If you're worried an intimate photo of you could be shared by someone else, the idea is to get it blocked before it appears online.

Similar technology is used to try to stop the spread of child abuse images.

Facebook's been testing the system in Australia and is extending the trial to the UK, the USA and Canada.

A spokesman told Newsbeat the idea is open to people in the UK now.

Facebook hasn't revealed any details about how the trial in Australia went - but obviously, the idea requires a huge leap of faith.

Would you send sexually explicit photos of yourself to Facebook?

Could you be certain the image would be handled sensitively - and crucially, not shared?

"seeing naked pictures of Hillary is a form of revenge porn, in reverse. "

Could have used this technique instead of water boarding?

This is incredibly stupid, but I’ll bet there are idiots out there willing to do it. The perverts are rubbing their hands together waiting.

So, Facebook will upload the images first to make revenge porn useless? No, they will make sure that any pictures of you naked that appear on the internet...ANYWHERE...will be magically intercepted. No, they will try to make naked pictures of you on Facebook not upload because algorithms...

No thanks...

“Similar technology is used to try to stop the spread of child abuse images.”

So apparently companies like Facebook have a catalogue of illegal images so that they can stop illegal images from being disseminated?

Considering that Facebook and other big companies have been hacked and personal information stolen, this seems like the worst possible approach to either scenario.

I just realized that this is floated for use in the UK as Zuck travels to Europe to answer privacy questions.

Here’s a novel idea: How about you don’t take naked photos of yourself to begin with?

So does it work in child porn pics & revenge porn or what? Seems like a simple thing to determine, there should be success stories if it is legit.

What happens when a bunch of underage teenage girls (most likely demographic to respond positively to the request) send in their photos? Facebook suddenly has the biggest stash of kiddie porn on the planet. In what parallel universe is that legal?

Oh my. I wonder why the obvious escapes people. The best hope you have that naked photos of you won’t show up online or anywhere else you wouldn’t want them to...is to not allow naked pictures to be taken. Is that too much common sense?

I remember in college hearing about Polaroids being passed around and I wondered then who was dumb enough to allow pictures of that type to be taken of themselves and not think they could be made public at some point. This is something that should have been a concern ever since photographs were invented.

The idea that sending your naked photo to strangers, not knowing even how many will have access to them will in any way protect you is insanity.
