Looks like the summit is slowing draining out downstream.
If part of the volcano gives way and slides into the ocean we could have 30-50M tsunamis hitting the west coast.
It begets a question....
Who would write insurance on anything on that island? From title insurance to basic car insurance...you’d have to be nuts
Not that type of volcano. No huge caldera, but a shield volcano, just flows that actually build up the island.
These open fissures are nowhere near the airport.
Which is why that land is so relatively cheap.
See the blob in the middle? As far as I can tell, this was never reported, per se. The media was obsessed with “new fissures”, and although this might have been one, it was right on top of F2, I think. Maybe it was F8. Of course, its remarkable feature is the huge area it covered. AFAICT, this transpired within a day, and consituted maybe 90% of the lava flow area in Leilani Estates.
Yet, AFAICT, it was never reported as such. It was never given any specific recognition as the single event that consituted 90% of the fissure lava flows.
I noticed it by comparison of thermal imaging on May 5, and May 7, when this feature appeared.
As it stands, this only reinforces my impression of the mindlessness of the news reporting in general, for which there is other evidence, of course.
I certainly welcome any correction.
I would like to know how many tons of global warming gases have been injected into the atmosphere and who is going to be fined....
It can still happen on this kind of volcano. It has happened in the past.
The lava flows have been walking themselves eastward for many thousands of years.
But airplanes do suck in a lot of air, and just like in Europe a few years ago, one smoky volcano can sure mess up a lot of flights paths.
What kind of volcano was Krakatoa?
Hmmmm.....checking Hot Wire now for deals.
The same reason they issue insurance for buildings, car insurance, etc,. west if the San Andreas Fault or along the “ring of fire” on the west coast of America. The lava flows being reported are “common” on that part of the island. Life continues everywhere else on the Big Island. The chance of a catastrophic explosion at Halemaumau Crater is as likely as the same occurrence in the Yellowstone National Park. Scientists have been warning for decades - it’s not if but when.
Interesting.
Krakatoa is much different than Hawaii but very similar to most of the Volcanos from Northern CA to Vancouver BC.
The most dangerous part of Hawaii volcanos is the potential for large land slides.
.
The west coast of what is the question.
.
This isnt really a blow kind of volcano. It has constant lava flows. One fissure opens and another closes. The only reason were hearing about it is its taking out houses. Last time that happened was quite a few years ago.....and they started building on that lava again about 8 or so years ago. They just wait for it to change direction and cool off then they start building again.
We have property about 20 minutes northeast of the new lava flows. Heading over there again in September.
