We are stewards of the planet. It is time we stepped to the plate.

I live along the Front Range of Colorado and I frequently hike in the foothills with my trusty dog. It is a common experience to look east onto the plains and on the horizon be able to clearly discern the curve of the earth.

For those who have never had this experience, it can be quite an epiphany. Right there before your eyes you can actually see the curve of the globe of this wonderful place we call home.

Take a long hike and a kite.

If I remember correctly, in the book of Revelations it says God will destroy those who destroy the earth.

1) the human eye cannot discern curvature at ground level, even from up on a 14er. (see “Eratosthenes”)

2) The eastern plains are not level anyway.

3) People should fight pollution of our environment with all our energy. The LA smog of the 70s, the filth of the Chicago river, and Lake Erie catching on fire were inexcusable events. Being clean doesn’t mean global warming is real.

4) CO2 is not “pollution”, plants love breathing it.

5) America is one of the cleanest places on earth. This lecture would be more properly given in China, Russia, India, the trashy middle east, etc.

6) If I gave you an unlimited budget and 1000 of the world’s best scientists and engineers, you would be unable to raise the temperature of the earth 2 degrees.

7) The answer to all the climate hysteria is governmental central planning, world government, redistribution of wealth on a global scale, and of course an enriched anointed elite.

8) I will ignore all begging me to please listen to the climate change argument as long I see Leonardo Di Caprio, AlGore, and all the LEADERS of this Luddite movement zipping around in private jets, Chevy Suburbans, and living in houses the size of apartment buildings.
Don’t expect me to care when your lifestyle show me you don’t seem the least bit worried.

9) Carbon credits do not change a thing. Why? Because you could still buy those offsets and NOT pollute. Say you live in an 859 Sq ft house, ride a bicycle and drive a Prius, you teleconference to the climate conference in Bali. You could still buy carbon credits, couldn’t you?
So how is it suddenly ok if you buy those credits to pollute all you can?

10) I am glad you had a good day hiking. That is what life is about. I am happy you came away inspired. But you have to be careful about drawing wrong conclusions from the emotions unleashed from a hike in he mountains.

So, what do you propose we use?

Steel cans work great but will greatly raise the cost of many products.

Wax coated paper works fine on some things but doesn’t have the flexibility of plastic for multiple squeezes (dish soap etc. Paper with wax or polymer coating doesn’t break down much. It’s also dirtier to produce.

A typical 2 liter bottle has about the same amount of plastic as a test tube does glass. In other words, not much. It gets blown and molded to size.

Everything breaks down over time. Would I prefer people kept their trash and disposed of it properly? Absolutely, however, I refuse to allow some government overlord to tell me what I can use. Your post seems to imply that’s what we need.

Roadways and such have lots of trash. I’m often amazed at how little trash I see in parks and on hiking trails. Most of it looks like stuff that got away, not what was dumped there.

It is a wicked creation designed to put the neck of the human race under a single boot.

I saw this article last week. It is the best description of what is going on I have seen so far.

I sent this article to him, and since you liked his response as I did, you might want to read this also. This is one of the best articles on this subject I have seen.

I think all conservatives support a clean environment. But what we are seeing in this day and age is literally revolutionary socialist movement that brooks ZERO dissent.

At this point I cannot find a single conservative voice in favor of pollution. I do find many who oppose the bizarre religion of man made climate change.

IE- don’t explain to me that cow farts are killing the planet, and that I should eat more ersatz soy hamburger and expect me not to giggle.

Seriously, you mention following the science. Ok, so how is growing corn for alcohol fuel making sense when it take more gallons of fuel to farm it that it produces in alcohol?
How are electric cars that use a boatload of rare earths better for the environment than a regular car?
How is a coal plant in China ok, but one here must be stopped.
How is a freight train with 100 tank cars of crude oil going through cities, over bridges, and over thousands of grade crossings safer than a static pipeline? (remember the furor over the ALaska pipeline? Now that where wildlife GATHERS)

As i see it, the hard left is making a boatload of unscientific demands and all are meant to push for world government on an EU bureaucracy model.

“this sounds suspiciously like elliptical Green Party/Sierra Club exhortation to - wait for it - stop driving, stop flying, turn the AC/heat down, recycle every drop of water and every egg carton, move into a smaller dwelling etc. etc.”

Only for the little people. We will still see the spectacle of our leaders leave their immense compound houses in SUVs, jump in their bizjet, and then have hundreds of bizjets fly to Bali or some other exotic location for climate chance conferences. Then fly home and wag their fingers at us.

Every time I read one of these 14 year old mentality diatribes, I laugh.

Just exactly what people is it that this “person” thinks really want to destroy the planet?

I don’t know a single person that doesn’t care about such matters. They try to live decent lives. They try not to do things that would seriously harm our environment.

You have to feel sorry for child-like people who think they’re the only one who understands “mother earth”.

Okay, now back to gnashing of teeth alternated with sobbing and calling everyone else names because they “just don’t get it.”

Seriously! Do we need to read these sixth and seventh grade brain vomits.

The enviro kooks about had my sister roped into this with the “good stewards of the planet” crapola. According to her we had to take care of God’s creation to which I said conservation is a good thing, worshiping mother earth and believing that man can change the climate is the height of arrogance and gaia is not God. She began to see the fallacy the left sneakily tried to use to get Christians on board with the mother earth worshiping fascism.

You are correct in that it is usually the plastic that gets away and ends up in our waterways and the oceans. Search “Pacific Garbage Patch” and Pacific Island trash to see where much of that plastic endsto up. There are biodegradable liquid containers that are made from a mix of various types of plant sugars. Once discarded, this material degrades in a matter of months, not years or decades. I don’t like the government dictate either but this single use plastic trash is catastrophic to a many many wildlife species and unless the government gets involved, it will only get worse. We are supposed to be good stewards of this earth and currently we’re not meeting the obligation I trusted to us by our Creator.

A few weeks ago, an article was posted stating that 80%+ of the plastic waste comes from 8 rivers, 6 of which are in China. We’re not the culprit wo we don’t need to pay the price.

Interesting, I just read the thread about the plastic trash. Someone figured out the size of the big trash “island” and divided it by the acreage of the oceans. It works out to one bottlecap per acre.

Now that changes the equation. In other words, if that’s our biggest problem, we don’t have a problem.

I’ve always wondered if this thing is so gargantuan, why have there been no satellite images, aircraft overflight video’s, boats trying to dock to it etc?
